The McClelland Page
Part 2
Find A McClelland
Created by Dave McClelland

Latest Update: Sept 4, 2007

Many people ask if I can help them trace their family roots. In most cases, I can't. So, I decided to try this - The "Find a McClelland" feature.

If you have ancestors you'd like to trace, send me an e-mail message, I'll post it here with your e-mail address so other McClelland Clan members can write back to you.

Send additions to me at Webmaster@McClellandMedia.com

At present this page is just a long list of messages from you, posted in the order I receive them, latest at the top. I would like to make this into a searchable database, but that will take some work. And with so many McClelland names, searching would be difficult anyway.

So you have to read... messages from other McClelland's, sharing what they know, hoping to find one more link in their family history. Good luck to you all!

NOTICE FOR ANYONE USING THIS PAGE

The following information has been provided by the contributors shown.

I cannot vouch for any of this information and cannot be held responsible for any errors
.
If your address is on here and you want to be removed, please e-mail to address above.

Try using the FIND function on your browser for this page - it may work, however some of the messages use abbreviations, so reading may be your only hope.

If an e-mail address in a message does not work, please let me know - I will attempt to find a correct address, but I will also leave messages with BAD addresses on this page in case the information it contains is of any use.

If you have success locating someone through this page, please let me know so we can share.

I wonder if anyone has been able to find any information about Martha Dale who was married to Col. John McClelland.
There has to be someone looking up information about the “Dale” Family.

Sharon Miller millersk@windstream.net

Hey!
I was excited to find this website.
I am not by name a McClelland, but I am by blood. J
My GG Grandfather, William Henry McClelland 1847-1908 was born in Ohio. Birth Records indicate William Henry’s father was born in Scotland…however, upon researching census data, I find he (Thomas McClelland, GGG Grandfather) may have been born in PA.
GG Grandfather William Henry McClelland was a young soldier in the Civil War, joining in Bucyrus, OH 12th Calvary. After being wounded at King Salt Mines, VA, was taken prisoner and because of the wound to his leg, his leg was amputated.
GG McClelland then went to Lenawee Co., MI to be fitted for an artificial limb, which, I understand he was unable to use because the disease had set in so bad, an artificial limb was not feasible. (That is not a good visual!) Then William Henry McClelland went to Stanton, MI (Douglass Twp)..I don’t know if his parents were there, or if he was granted a land patent, moved there, then his folks moved there…?? I don’t know. If he would have gone to Lenawee Co., MI (35 min north of Ohio)…one would think he was from Michigan..???
William Henry McClelland then married a Chaffee (GG? to Roger B. Chaffee, Astronaut)… in Portland, MI.
Any who….(zzzzz, are you awake?) ha ha
Bottom Line: I am seeking William Henry McClelland’s father, Thomas McClelland’s gravesite. I don’t know if it’s in Ohio, PA, Michigan….
I don’t know where to look, or what to do next.
Any ideas?
Thank you.

Hi David the Webmaster McClelland,

I received an email from Bob McClelland with the information about the McClelland's. It caught my eye because my name is David McClelland , David Donald McClelland. How's that for Scottish? Fortunately I did not delete the email as it ended up in the Junk Mail. I will do some exploring of this site.

My Aunt , who is now in her 90's has been trying to trace our roots for years and has quite a collection of stories and information. I will ask her permission to send you her information or her email address. It is somewhat inaccurate since much of the information of unsavory characters was omitted (to keep our line pure). I warn you , the reading of the information is therefore disjointed and not as interesting as it could be.

Me; I am a retired Industrial Arts / Vocational Educator with background in the Air Force as an electronics technician. I noticed that many McClelland's have a musical background or interest. Me too. Since retirement I've taken up the Bluegrass banjo. After 2 years of practicing the 3 finger techniques I can play a recognizable " You are My Sunshine". We McClelland's are a stubborn lot..

I noticed also that there are a few practicing psychologists and Psychiatrists. My wife could use one or the other of them, maybe both. (Just to keep it in the family).

I live in Manitoba Canada and am a 3rd generation Manitoba McClelland. My siblings and I have all traveled extensively and have settled temporarily and some permanently in many parts of the world. Most are back in Canada now.

Will keep on the site. It is interesting.

David Donald McClelland. uncledave@westman.wave.ca

PS . The Coat of Arms that I am familiar with is somewhat different. See attached.

Dave's note: This is the Coat of Arms I was familiar with as well, my Dad had a painting of this version.

Hi there Dave-
I was just stumbling around the internet, looking for my brother's
website, ironically. Very reassuring to know there are more
McClellands around the globe! Do you know anything about a
McClelland's Pub, est. 1837- it's in Scotland. It's on this t-shirt i
have, and i'm never sure if it's a real place. any help/advice? Thanks
again, glad to have found this site!

Hi Guys,

Advice required on finding McClelland's in Ireland??

I'm stuck at JOHN McCLELLAND (McClellan), born 1840 in Ireland, married a SARAH JANE WEIR (born 1842) most likely in or near Aghalee, Antrim in the 1860's as Sarah was baptised in Aghalee on July 3, 1842.

Any info gratefully received, maybe John had Brother's and Sisters who emigrated to North America but my branch, John and Sarah emigrated to North East England!!

On a slightly related note, my bottle of McClelland's ten year old single malt whiskey is nearly empty!!! Although distilled and bottled in Scotland by Bowmore Distilleries, I'm finding it difficult to replenish my supplies. Any ideas!!?!?!

I am the owner of Bladnoch a small distillery in SW Scotland built in 1817 by John and Thomas McClelland. We get a lot of enquiries at the distillery from McClellands all over the world.
There are numerous gravestones in nearby Wigtown belonging to the McClelland family. I have a few pages of details of these people. Could I email you the details or post them somewhere on your website.

Hello Dave,

I previously sent you information re the McClelland family/descendants
living in the Skagit county, WA area. I wanted to let you know that my
e-mail address has changed -- the first one is sylvammns@hotmail.com
and the second e-mail address for me is sja64jha@aol.com.

You are doing a fantastic job for all McClellands. Thank you.

Some history facts re McClellands --
I have found three McClelland men mentioned in the records for
the Applegate Wagon Train to OR. Two of them turned off and went to CA
and the third was an old indian fighter by the name of Robert McClelland.
He died on the Columbia River trying to save the Applegate boy when
their raft overturned.

Also in the records of Lewis and Clark when they were going upriver
to the Mandan camp, they mention a trader by the name of McClillin. He is
also mentioned in their journals when they return.

Thanks again. Sylvia Ammons

Dave,

Just a note to let you know that the Clan MacLellan Association has a new web address: www.clanmaclellan.net

The .com version is defunct. Maybe you could change your link and post this info? Thanks so much,

Hullo!

My grandfather, John McClelland came from Northern Ireland but lived in Milngavie, near Glasgow for a long time - I think that he was involved with the paper mill there. More that that I do not know.

Bset wishes

you sound like a true McClelland, all take work and life very serious but do like to go on the 'hoi' (drink) (Hartlepudlian slang) every week end (at least). 2 of my brothers are school teachers, the other one is a fireman in London (so gets all the girls) my sister has worked for the govenment for the last 26 years (but we try not to hold it against her), I am a registered nurse, working with elderley, (????) , I reckon that being a McClelland is a good thing. I went up to see MacLellans Castle in Kirkudbright last March,-- bloody great. If you can afford to come over - do it. You will really enjoy. Never mind - we still have the best looking tartan - don't we? Love Ann McClelland xx mcclelland@ntlworld.com

Hi, my name is Nancy McClelland Schave. I live in Skagway Alaska. I have done extensive research on my McClelland line. I have visited Northern Ireland four times. My family lived in Conner/Kells, just southeast of Ballymena, Antrim. Joseph and Mary McClelland had Samuel, Thomas, John, Elizabeth, Agnes, James and William Alexander. Sam, Tom, Agnes came to the U.S. settling in MI. James and Wm came to western PA working as coal miners. Elizabeth married and stayed in the U.K. She died young and her husband remarried. All her sons except the first emigrated to Canada. After Joseph died, Mary (Lockhart) McClelland came to MI and stayed until her death. Elizabeth's oldest son actually emigrated to MI, but died there within a year of coming over--his name is on the same stone as his grandmothers. Thomas married Rachel in Ireland. They had no children. Samuel had no children. John, my gg had four. One died before adulthood, the second to go died in an accident in her 30"s. My grandfather had only one child, my father. The last of the four had no children, and died when quite old. James and Wm. emigrated to western PA where they had large families.
Wm came to PA first and then brought Mary Ayers over and married her. James was married to Sarah Cathcart in Ireland, went to Lanark, Scotland to work in the coal mines and then came to western PA.
I'd love to share all of my research with others who are interested, as well as make contact with people who are related.

Hi Dave:
Great page. Came across it quite by accident while killing some time in the office today. The mercury in the thermometer outside is hovering at a chilly 1 degreeF. and the community of Tupper Lake, where I live, is shivering. Our electricity was out the other day for about six hours in minus 20 degree temperatures, and we're still trying to get warm.
My name is M. Dan McClelland and I grew up in Napanee, Ontario. My father was Harold McClelland. His father was Earl McClelland and my grandparents had a great farm in Bath, Ontario, where I had many wonderful days growing up. Earl's parents were John and Jane McClelland, who emigrated from Ireland (Belfast?) late in the 1800s and they farmed for a while on Amherst Island, Ontario.
I move to northern New York as a young man and currently publish weekly newspapers here.
I don't know much about my great grandparents, and would like to hear from anyone who does. I can be reached at: tlfreepress@yahoo.com
Keep up the good work, Dave!
Best Regards,
Dan McClelland.

Hi David
My husband DAVID is part McClelland. His grandfather Richard McClelland, married Isobel or Isabella (Johnson). Both very Irish but Grandmother may have come from a scottish Johnson line. Originally from Belfast, they moved near Woolwich UK in about 1940. They had 3 daughters, - Isobel, Anne and Patricia - and a son Richard who died about 1976. Isobel married DAVID BEAUCHAMP SEYMOUR of BELFAST, and they had DAVID ALBERT RICHARD - my husband - in 1937 and Dorothy who was born in England in 1942 but died at the age of 13 months of diphtheria. Isobel died in 1993 in Lincolnshire followed by David in 1996.
The son Richard had a son Mark, and 2 daughters. We seem to have 'mislaid' the children of Richard, Anne and Patricia.

Hi Dave, I found your site by accident. I typed in: 1953 Michigan marriage “Andrew Emery” and this site came up. I figured it had something to do with Andrew because his wife was a McClellan. Found the entry by James E Pepin <jkpep@together.net>, which is the same line as ours, because all the information he has is consistent with mine with a little extra stuff. I tried to e-mail him, but all e-mails come back undeliverable.
Andrew Emery is my husband’s 2nd great grandfather. Andrew was born May 1, 1831 in Vermont (found on death record from Huron County at the Library of Michigan in Lansing). He married Lucy Ann McClellan on September 11, 1953, (marriage location unknown at this time). I figured Lucy died at childbirth, because she died the same year their baby was born. This is, however, unverified. He remarried a woman named Anna Burns on May 5, 1866 (this location also unknown). Anna was born July 29, 1834. They had a child named Clara born Nov. 29, 1870, Rubicon, Huron County, Michigan. Anna died Dec. 1 1908. Andrew died October 27, 1893 in Huron Co., Port Austin, Michigan, according to the death record. My husband is related through Andrew’s son, Charles Eddy Emery, his great grandfather. Andrew Emery served in the Civil War. I have papers that list him as an enlisted man in the 3rd Michigan Infantry, Company G. It has Pontiac listed as his “home”. It has been tough to find information.
If anyone has anything more than what I have here or what is already listed on this site, I would greatly appreciate any help anyone could give me. I hope the information is helpful to someone else as well. Even if you don’t know anything more at this time, but are familiar with this line, I’d love to hear from you!
Thanks, C. Emery <emerysden@cmsinter.net>

Hello,

My name is Samantha McClelland. My grandfather is 100% Irish, I don't know, however, where he was born. His name is Richard McClelland (middle name unknown) and he married my grandmother, Elizabeth (Betty) Lisi (middle name unknown), Elizabeth is 100% Sicilian Italian. They had 6 children. First was Annete, who married David Waters and had 2 children, Michelle and David (both Michelle and David are unmarried). Second was Darlene, who is still unmarried. Third was Richard (not Richard Jr.), who married Terry (maiden name unknown) and had 3 children (1 of which was stillborn whose name is Britttany), their other 2 children's names are Danielle and Holly. All of their children are unmarried as well. Then there was Michael (my dad) who married Melissa Polinko and had 4 children (1 of which died months after being born), Samantha (me), Alexandra and Jessica. None of us are married. Last of the children of Richard and Elizabeth was Tina, who married Dave Noel and had 3 children, Brandon, Ryan and Lindsay. None of their children are married as well. I hope I can find some of my ancestors!
Thanks and God Bless,
Samantha McClelland

Hi. I just found your website and I think it is GREAT! I am trying to find any information about my Grandfather, George Brinton McClelland, who resided in Upstate New York (Witherbee, NY) with his wife, Elsie Kennedy. They had 4 children, George Jr., Neltson, Marjorie and my mother, Ethel. I am looking for family connections and a possible link to the Civil war general, also a George Brinton McClelland. This had been a rumor but never proven. My Grandfather passed away in the 1960’s. Not much information has ever been passed down. I would love to hear from anybody who has any information about these McClellands in New York. My name is Sharon Gray. Sharon.Gray@erickson.com

Hi Dave I am a fellow McClelland searcher. My Great Grandfather, Thaddeus McClelland was born April 7,1875 near Memphis, Tennessee. He married My Great Grandmother , Emma Jane Rind in Arkansas.
Thad's parents were William S. McClelland born Sept. 10,1849 and Margeret Moore born Dec.18, 1848. She was born in N. Carolina.
Thad's Grandparents were William S. McClelland and Lucinda Davenport, Lucinda was from Mississippi.
We are cousins to the Texas Garners of (Cactus Jack fame) Also they always told a story about Great Grandpa running away at age 15 because he had accidentally shot his brother's eye out with an arrow. He went to Texas, lied about his age and joined the Texas Rangers. We had a cousin, Sarah Francis come to visit once when I was a child and we heard tales of McClelland exploits we had never heard before! I cannot seem to locate anything about Thad's ancestors and would love to fill in some of the blanks. Thank you , Teddy Rose princess@fidalgo.net

My mothers name was Dora Mae Sullivan. She left when I was a baby so I don't know anything about her. From what I remember my father owned a bar called "The little corral"

Hi Dave! How exciting to find this website especially since is has been created by a David McClelland. My father was David Leman McClelland, my brother is David Leman McClelland, Jr., and I'm Diane Pape nee McClelland. It is great to see all the McClellands! Hello Cousins!

I am looking for information on my gg grandfather David McLellan who arrived in Canada from Scotland via Dublin, Ireland. He married a woman by the last name of Wilkinson or Wilconsin before leaving Scotland. They had a son, Andrew, born during the voyage probably around 1845. We think they first settled in Sudbury, Ontario, but son John Edwin was born in Simco, Ontario in 1849, Josiah Alfred b. 1854. Both John & Josiah settled in Michigan. Two other sons Charlie and maybe Robert, I believe were born in Canada but don't know their birthdates. I haven't been able to located Canadian birth records to trace back to David. Anyone have any clue as to my elusive gg grandfather? Thanks so much. My email address is dbpape@yahoo.com

P.S. True to my Scottish ancestry, I piped in a the Birmingham, Michigan Celtic Pipes and Drum band for almost ten years! What fun that was.

Hi Dave,

HI I'M DAVE MCCLELLAND FROM BELFAST NORTHERN IRELAND cherelle.david@ntlworld.com

Hello Dave. Just located your web site and as I am a McClelland, thought I would send you this e mail with some background.
I originally emigrated from Lurgan, Co. Armagh, Nr.Ireland in 1957, and have lived in Western Canada ever since. I am the olderst son of Robert McClelland (Wife Elizabeth nee Allen). My full name is William Allen McClelland (Bill). I have three brothers, Jack, now deceased, who was a goalkeeper for Arsenal F.C. in the early 60's. The other brothers still living in Lurgan, Nr. Ireland are Raymond and Bobby. I really don't have much history of my family tree, except my Dad had two brothers, Jack and William. William died in his early 20's and Jack died in 1970...not really sure of the date. My grandfather William McClelland was in the British Army, Royal Garrison Artillery and was killed at the Battle of the Somme on September 2nd 1916, and is buried at Maricourt, close to Amiens, France. I have two sons David and Kevin, both of whom live in Canada, David in Ottawa, and Kevin here in Calgary, Alberta, where I also live. I am now 69 years old and am retired. Just thought I would send this information to you to add on to "The McClelland Clan"........

Hi Dave
Here is a new addition to your McClelland clan list. My name is Kiernan Allen Yazer McClelland. I'm from Ottawa, Canada. I believe that my grandfather, William Allen McClelland, has sent you history regarding my family's history. Well now, I'm going to tell my part of the family. Like my grandfather has already stated, my branch of the family immigrated from Northern Ireland to Calgary around the 1957. My father, David McClelland married my mother Neda McClelland and they both moved to Ottawa were I was born. My brother, Aydin McClelland was born in Edmonton, Alberta and my family lived happily in Edmonton until we moved to England and lived there for about 2 years. Then we moved back to Ottawa and we have been living there since. That's all I know about my own family. I'll keep you updated. See ya.

Seeking information on a Martin McClellan father listed as John McClelland sometimes, John McClellan, or John McClellon. In Blair Co. PA, USA. Also his mother has been listed as Catharine McClellan(McClellan( on obit. this could be so as there are many McClellan families in the area that are not blood relatives during the era.
Martin worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad and died at age 66. Still working for the Bells Gap roundhouse or in the Juniata Roundhouse as a stationary engineer. I have looked for Martin's birthplace for several years and have always come up empty. Is there another name, first name that would be common for Martin? Has anyone else come across my Martin? In his obit it lists one brother, William of Glasgow, Pa and one sister Alice Hopkins of Altoona, PA. His obit spelled McClellan.

I am looking to find any info on my grandmother ELLEN JANE MCCLELLAND born c 1890 in ?? Ireland maybe near Belfast. All the info I have is from her marriage certificate of 1918,it gives her father as David deceased. She married in Kent England and died 1954 Strood Kent.

Hello,
What can you tell me about the travels of Laura Ingalls Wilder in year 1891 leaving Minnesota to Northern Florida?
It is said that she either took wagon to Westville Florida or Train or she used both means of travel.
What train was running through Minnesota at that time? Was she seen by old timers at that time?

Also Laura came through Westmorland -St Marys-Silver Lake into Kansas along the missouri river 1891 on her journey to north Florida. What can you tell me about this? Was she seen at that time? Did someone snap a photo of her?

Please help with this :ASAP.

Hi Dave,
Since you are involved in so many McClelland interests, you might want to investigate the McClellan DNA Project at http://www.familytreedna.com/public/McClellanProject/ and add it to your listings. This Project is primarily for hobbyists who are using DNA to assist with their genealogy. We have had some success stories along with a few surprises. I am the host and will be happy to answer questions.
Best wishes,

Hello  Dave,
I just noticed your site and thought I would join it.
My great, great grandmother was Anne McClelland  married to Alan Fraser  and living in Queensland Australia.
They had a son, Angus Fraser (died  3/2/1890 ) who married  Alice Jane Hatton on 10/10/1885
Alice came to Australia on board the Ancilla  25th Sept. 1866
Alice Hatton and Angus Fraser had two children,  my grandmother Alice Margaret Fraser born 12/11/1888 and a son, Edward ( or Edwin ) Alan Fraser born 6/2/1887
Edward ( or Edwin ) married Amanda Willis in Queensland  19/8/ 1914

I am still researching my family  but I hope you find the above information interesting and useful.
I want to go back a generation or two and find Anne McClellands parents and then their parents.
Some of these people  must  have travelled to Australia in the very early days.

Regards, Maureen sesame@kooee.com.au

My grandfather, Benjamin McClelland, 1856-1906, county Monaghan,
Ireland, had two older brothers--first names unknown to me--who
emigrated to the US midwest (Iowa?) in the 1870s-1880s while he stayed
in Ireland to look after their mother. He married Margaret Taylor
(1858-1936), with whom he had seven children between 1887 and 1901. His
widow and surviving children (one died as young boy) emigrated to
Toronto in 1913. Robert, the oldest son (1887-1949) lived near Moline,
Illinois from the mid-1920s until his death.
I would be curious to find out if anyone believes they might be
descended from either of my granfather's brothers.

I am looking for any information about Samuel Thomas McClelland born 1861, possibly England (London). He died 1940 in Victoria, Australia. His parents were Samuel Armour McClelland and Annie Tomlin - no details known. Samuel Thomas married Clara Atherley in 1884 in Glasgow and they had nine children. I would like to be able to find a record of his birth and then possibly trace his parents.

Greetings. My 6th great grandfather was John B. McClelland, married to Martha Dale. He was killed on an expedition in 1782 into Ohio from PA. His wife lived on with a son and is buried in SW PA. They had several children, and I descend from their son Samuel Emanuel and wife Ellen/Eleanor Crooks. 7th great grandfather was also John B., and I understand he was born in Ireland although I have no verification of that fact. Anyone with information on this line, I would love to correspond. Please write. Rebecca MeRebecca@aol.com

Hello, my maiden name was Ann Elizabeth McClelland. I was born in 1931. My father's name was William Robert McClelland, Jr. and he had one brother, John (Jack). My grandfather's name was William Robert McClelland and he was married to Elizabeth (Bessie) Redwine from Atlanta, Georgia. My great grandfather was John Forsythe McClelland and he was married to Amanda Reagan.

My Uncle John McClelland had a son in the 1930's. At least I think that was the date. The son was born in Newport News, VA and I have reason to believe he died some years ago.

I have always wanted to know more about John's son. Can anyone out there give me any information about John McClelland's son?

Thank you.

Hi there, I am looking for the McLelland's from Ontario Canada. My father inlaw, Richard Oscar McLelland, Born July 14th 1923, Deceased July 23 2001 had 3 sisters, Mable, Pearl and Ester. He had a brother Sedrick, They have all passed away but we would like to find other family members and find out a little history.Myhusbands Grandparents were Samuel McLelland and Maybe Mary McLelland. We are unsure of his Grandmothers first name.
My father inlaw, Richard Oscar McLelland had 5 children. Richard born February 17th 1956, Ronald around 1952, Randolph August 3rd 1954, Roxanne November 13th 1955, Robert January 29th 1963.My husband is unsure of any cousins etc. If you know these were your relatives, please contact us.

I am also looking for McClellan ancestors.  To date I haven't been very successful!
My paternal grandmother was born MARY MC CLELLAN 13 April 1896 in Milwaukee WI to JOHN MC CLELLAN and KATE/CATHERINE MC GUIGAN.
John was born September 1858 somewhere in Michigan and died 23 March 1917 in Milwaukee WI.  He and Catherine are buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Milwaukee.
John and Catherine were married 6 November 1890 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Marinette WI.  John was a glass cutter in Milwaukee.  They had four children that I know of:  William b. March 1893, Maude b. November 1894, Mary b. April 1896, and Ruby b. 1902.
John was the son of JOHN MC CLELLAN and MARY MC DOODLE, both born in Michigan according to the 1900 census.  I have been unable to find out any more about them.
I am guessing that at some point the McClellans came to America from Ireland, as my g-grandmother, Kate, was born in Ireland.  The McGuigan and McClellan surnames are both found in the Ulster area so I'm guessing (again) that the families may have been acquainted in the "old country".
At any rate, my search has come to a halt and I would appreciate it if anyone could help me out.
Thanks for the great site.  I've enjoyed reading about the many other McClellans, MacLellands, McClellands, etc. etc.

"Harry McClelland, a well-known newspaper man, died at his home, 1358 S. 46th Street [Philadelphia] on Saturday [no specific date is shown], after an illness of several months. He was formerly connected with the Philadelphia Record, but for the last 10 years was identified with the Boston Journal. Hi, I have an update for the message:

From: Amy Seyfried
I have only sketchy information on my McClelland link. Elizabeth "Betsey" McClelland, born ca 1837 (place?), married William Pender. They resided in Dereham Township, County Oxford, Ontario, Canada, by the time of the 1871 census. William and Betsey moved to the state of Washington (Brush Prairie, Clark County) before 1884. Betsey died in 1907. Hoping to find more info - and cousins! I have more info on the Penders, but nothing on McClelland.
              Regards,
              Amy Seyfried, Carmichael, California

From census records Elizabeth McClelland was born in September 1840 in Ireland. Her father was born in Scotland and her mother was born in Ireland. These McClellands would have moved to Canada from Ireland between 1840 and 1862.
William and Elizabeth had 3 children: Benjamin Pender (born 10 Nov 1863), Emma Jean Pender (born 18 Aug 1864) and John J. Pender (born 30 Jul 1866), all in Canada. By 1881 they were living in Adelaide, Ontario. William was a carpenter.

Hi! I am Nancy MacClellan Sears, treasurer of the Clan MacLellan organization which has members all over the U.S. and Canada with a few in England and Scotland. We have a huge database. When a person joins, our genealogy archivist does a search of the database and notifies the new member if there are other members, past or present, who are in the same line of MacLellans (any spelling - and there are several). You may contact me at nancy.sears@louisville.edu if you are interested in receiving an application for membership. The Clan holds annual meetings at various locations throughout the U.S. and Canada. Our archived records are housed at the Odom Genealogical Library in Moultrie, GA.

My original immigrant ancestors are Robert (1716-1789) and Nichola (Gordon) McClellan who came from Kirkcudbright, SCT to NY in September 1774 with their 6 children on board the ship, Golden Rule: William M (b 1755), John (b 1758), Robert (b 1766), Grisey (b 1769), Mary (b 1770), Nancy (b 1771). During my research I have traced descendants of all 6 children. The first 10 years in this country were spent in VT. In 1784 the family moved to Washington County, NY and many descendants are still in that area. Feel free to contact me if you would like to share information on this family.

Visited The McClelland Page while surfing. Thought I should bring some changes in the Clan MacLellan pages to your attention. The Clan website was not being kept upto date by the webmaster so we moved to clanmaclellan.net . The webmaster there will be temporarily taking over the storekeepers job until we find a replacement. See this site for cotton material in the Clan Tartan http://www.thescottishweaver.com/specMaclellanC.html. We have already ordered the minimum initial amount to establish the minimum price which is posted at the site. Due to the hurricanes we have yet to see any of the fabric so I can't tell you how good, or bad, it is.
In a different direction a member in Canada recommended a book "Galloway a Land Apart." Takes the area from the geologists idea of what it looked like after the ice age through the politics of the times up to the present. The politics, religion, and general differences are well covered and the name MacLellan occurs frequently. Not always in a good light, but then neither does anyone else's family name. Galloway a Land Apart by Andrew McCulloch, published by Birlinn Limited of Edinburgh, ISBN 1-84158 027 9. D. Richard Torrance is to bring out a new book on the MacLellans of Galloway. I have heard that this is an update of his two volumes of the same name.  There is a rumor that he will soon have a volume on the MacLellans in Ulster finished. His other books have been published by The Scottish Genealogical Society.

Good health to you

Hi Dave,
As most people have posted here, I too just stumbled upon your great website tonight.  I'm a McClelland (by birth).  Here's my family history as best I know it.

(Me) Lisa Renee McClelland-Stults 1964-        married Jason Stults in 1998
(My Parents) Norman Eugene McClelland 1933-1997 married Diane Rosier in 1963
(My Grandparents) James Edwin McClelland 1908-1982 married Marie Miles 1911-1998
(My Great-Grandparents) Thomas McClelland married Susan Gilkenson

This is all I know and I do wish I knew more.  My Grandparents were born in Marshalltown or Colfax, Iowa.  My Grandfather worked in the coal mines in this area when he was young.  They moved to Rock Island, Illinois at some point which is where I was born.  There they owned a local tavern.

Thanks for the site!

Hello, we are investigating the McKenzie Clelland family,
deriving from Scotland (early 1800s), Carlisle (late 1850s, early
1860s) and London (the later part of the nineteenth and early
part of the twentieth century).
The family seem to have chosen their own surnames and at least
one of them consulted Somerset House on their entitlement to both
names. So we have McClelland, Clelland and McKenzie-Clelland in
various permutations; and often the use of McKenzie as a
forename.
We have traced the family back to Robert and Georgeanna, who
married in Carlisle in 1862. Robert?s father was George Clelland.
Robert and Georgeanna's children were Emily, William, Robert,
Elizabeth, Herbert and Edwin, born between 1863 and 1873.
If this rings a bell with anyone then please do get in touch, it
would be great to hear from you!
Thank you for creating this site. Dave. It's encouraging to see
so much interest in the clan.

and his wife Margaret Geerhart (1801-1864). They evidently moved right
after their marriage. Their children were born in Venango and Butler
counties, Pennsylvania.
First real proof of their existence is an 1823 tax
list in Venango Co. Both are buried in Strattonville, Clarion, PA. I find
a young Alexander McClellan in Centre Co. in the 1820 census with no
children, just a wife in the 1820-1825 bracket.
Will share data I have on their descendants.

Hi Dave, congratulations on your fab site.
My maiden name is  Mabel McClelland.  I've never been able to trace any of my father's family so your site is 'the last chance saloon.'
My father's name was Robert Richard McClelland, he had a brother William  who I think may have settled in Malaysia.   He also had  two sisters Lillian and Mabel.  Lillian was married to a man called Parkes and I believe they had one son, (possibly called Robert).
My grand-father was a sea captain and spent some time in Japan.  My grand-mother's maiden name was Colston  (Rebecca) They lived in Southend-on Sea for some years.  I have some Australian letters which lead me to believe that some of my ancestorsr, perhaps my great, great grand-father spent some time in Sydney, Australia.
I would be thrilled to hear from any McClelland who might have some information, however scanty.

Hi Dave:
Its been a while since I've been able to take my research up again.
I had a website that turned from free to pay, so I had to give it up.
Also, I understand the kid thing. My daughter kept me busy for the
last 4 years.
Here's my search question for those interested.
I have many aunts/uncles/cousins, etc. all residing in the
Westmorland County of PA. My grandmother was Catherine
Moore-McClelland, married to David William McClelland before
divorcing and leaving her with 8 children (my dad the oldest - David,
Tom, Paul, Roy, Kenneth, Luella, Dolores, and Seranna "Bunny").
From that point, I know about the Moores and some about the Pershing
and Riddle side, but that's about all I know is names.
The Moore family had a lot of children (Catherine "Kate", Roy, Glen,
Seranna, and those are the ones I can remember).
Anyone familiar with any of these surnames or the relatives I've
mentioned?
Thanks. Fran Popp fpoppy610@yahoo.com

My name is Keith T. McClelland, DOB: 5/22/44.  My father was George T. McClelland, DOB: 9/10/12.  He was the only child of George H. McClelland, DOB circa 1880 in Ohio.  George Hamilton McClelland was a Presbyterian minister who was a decorated Army Chaplain under "Blackjack" Pershing in the AEF (American Expeditionary Force).  He had a brother, James McClelland, who settled in Detroit, MI.  [I have no children that I know of.]  What, if anything, does the crowd know of these Ohio-born McClellands?  Thank you in advance for your attention to this inquiry. Hi there,
I just found the web site and hope someone out there can help me.
I'm trying to trace my family tree and I need to find several links with my grandfathers mothers parents.
I would be interested if anyone out there has links with any of these names;
Thomas McClelland(McClellan) who lived in Newton Stewart in the early 1900's. Could have married a Jane from either Canada or Ireland. They all lived in
Stanley st, Tranmere on the 1891 cencus.
Thir son ( could have sisters)Alexander McClelland who married Margaret and they lived in Tranmere Birkenhead. They had four children Daisy, May, Jane
E and Alexander McClelland. Alexander Jnr had one son I know of who was called
Donald and fought in WW2. I have lots of old photo of most of these people.
Hope someone out there can help,

Hello all other McClelland seekers,

I am wondering if anybody has any information about a Liverpool based Charles McClelland who was my grandfather. Previously his family were called Blake so we have an Irish/Jewish angle, some of my family moved to Australia and some moved to New York.
If anybody has any info about possible links no matter how tenuous please email me.

Thanks, Jonathan McClelland. shovlins@railplant.fsnet.co.uk

Hi,
My name is Erin McClelland. I have been trying to find information on my family history with little luck.  What I have been told is that my family moved to Canada from either Scotland or Ireland (I believe it was most likely Ireland) around the 1830's.  They settled in the Ottawa Valley.  My great-great-grandmother was Annie McClelland (nee Cameron).  My great-grandfather was William Robert McClelland and he was either an only child or the only son (with two sisters).  He married Evelyn Padget (spelling?), had two children and died relatively young.  If anyone has any information please let me know.
Thanks,

Hello again Dave,  Thanks to this site I found a long-lost cousin Carol McClelland Shiels and we’re still looking for our Canadian (and perhaps old country) roots.  Our grandfather, Oscar D. McClelland, was born in Bear River NS in 1879-1880.  His father was Robert M. McClelland and mother was Eleanor Saunders. Our paternal grandmother was Ethel Jane Cooney, born 1878. Her father was William J. of Boston Mass and her mother was another Nova Scotian from Cape Breton named Mary M. Johnson.  I know there are relations in western Canada. I hope they’re reading this.

My son, Dave, sent me a fax today with your information.
I guess I am the only one of our spelling doing anything about
research.
My grandfather was born in Bowmanville in the late 1880's. He was
George Bigham. His son, my father, was George Andrew, born in Comber ON
in 1907. I was born in Toronto in 1933, my daughter in Toronto in 1960,
and my son David in Toronto in 1964. David now has 3 sons, born in 1999,
and twins in 2003.
I would be delighted to share and discuss our relationships. I have
considerable material developed by my parents in the 1960's, with little
confirmation. I have a desire to develop all the little strings I can.

Searching for marriage of Hugh McClelland born Londonderry, Ireland and Elizabeth Williamson.  They married prior to 1826 possibly in Monaghan Co. Ireland.  Their first child Mary was born June 1826.  I don't know where she was born or baptised. The second my ggrandfather David was born June 1828 in Knockbride Parish, and baptised at Corraneary Presbyterian Meetinghouse, Cavan Co. Ireland.
The other children were Sarah, James, Hugh, Robert and Martha all baptised at the same parish.
The family emigrated to Renfrew Co., Ontario Canada in 1842.
Hugh Sr. also had a sister Mary who married James Rowan in Ireland, and emigrated to New Brunswick, Joseph who married 1 Nancy 2 Mary Rock and stayed in Ireland.  Joseph died in Monaghan Co.  There is possibly another sibling Margaret.

Hi, just read over your site of McClelland, I found it to be fun, you see I also am a McClelland by birth right, but I don't know any McClellands except my siblings.  My father's name was Joseph Alan McClelland (born in 1924 0r 25), his mother's name was Bonnie (who later in the 1960s moved to Canada, and was a writer,  and I believe his father's name was Henry McClelland [whom I believe died when son Joe was young).  Joe grew up in Mississippi, raised by a grandmother.  Later was in WW2, then worked construction in Viet Nam.  This is so very little to go on, Joe died in the 1990s.  I've never searched for info.  All though it would be great to know if I have other family out there.  I thought there were only a few McClellands, oh I must have been so wrong.  Whenever I travel I will look in the phone book to see how many McClellands are in there, usually only a few, but  look at us now.

Hi Dave
It's been quite a few years but I stumbled across your page again.  I left a message back in 2000 that my 10 year old daughter, Tiffany, is looking for her dad.  He disappeared when she was only nine-months old.  She's going to be 14 soon and is still wondering who and where her dad is.

My email address has changed since then.  It's now ctpena@msn.com - should anyone have have information on James Russell McClelland (or McLelland or McClellan, etc.) I'd appreciate it.  I have his SSN, but like his name, he often changes it.

Looking for details of ancestors of my grandparents SAMUEL McCLELLAND and MARY ELISABETH McCLELLAND (nee WHINTON, probably in the Carlow area of Ireland) of Castlereagh Road, Belfast. The only dates I have are approximate and refer to my grandmother. Born 1878, died 1962. My grandfather died many years earlier, and I believe was employed in some capacity by Harland and Wolf Shipyard. They had at least 8 children:

Hi Dave,

Great Site!!  Didn't know there were so many McClellands out there.  I too am a McClelland.  Born 1959, Isle of Wight England.  Emmigrated to South Bend, Indiana in 1962 and then to California in 1963.

My father George Anderson Hugh McClelland born Bushey, 1932 and his cousin John McClelland have documented our genealogy way back to its roots in Scotland.

I have noted that there is one missing link and that is my grandfather's brother Alford McClelland who was supposedly the black sheep of the family and he was banished to the America's in his teen years.   I believe he was born in the 1860's or 1870's.  I had heard that he ended up in Ohio or somewhere in the South and became a sheriff.  I would be very interested in seeing if he has any living relatives as I hardly have any close relatives. (My grandfather Hugh McClelland was the commodore of the British India fleet)

Alford intrigues me!!  I know that he traveled a lot to Burma.  Any information would be very helpful in my search.

Thank you.

My maiden name is McClelland and I didn't see any based in Ky. though
they originally migrated to PA as steelworkers.
My name is Sylvia Louise McClelland 1956 and I have a brother James
David McClelland Jr 1950. My dad was James David McClelland Sr. 1913 and
mom was Leodia LaFern Shelton McClelland 1920. My dad had 3 brothers
Paul Donald, Nelson and Herbert. He also had 3 sisters Fern Duley, Ida
Bell Shelton and Mary Magdeline McClelland (who died of scarlet fever at
2). His dad's name was Karl (spelled with a K). He died as a indirect
result of working at Armco/AK Steel in Ashland, Ky. (on the Ohio, W.Va.
border) back before there were unions and safety regulations. He was
born sometimes in the 1880-1890s. His wife was Mary Agnus Watson. I
think she was born around 1895.
All of this bunch have always lived in Ashland, Ky. as far as I know but
I remember once dad telling me they had first migrated here to PA during
the potato famine. But outside of this he didn't know as he had never
met any of his dad's kin except for his dad's sister Elmira who lived to
be around 100 and died around 1986.
That's about all I know but I'd be intereste in hearing from others who
think we might be kin.

After researching my family for twenty-four years, my friends parents ask in Jan 2003 if I would research their lines. After requesting cemetery and funeral records I found the Pounds line marrying McClelland.
David W. (Winfield) Pounds funeral record in Warren, OH show his parents as Charles Barkley Pounds and Hannah McClelland. David was their only child.
I now have the funeral and cemetery records from Washington, PA for Charles B. (Barkley) Pounds born 11/06/1858 Indiana, PA-12/03/1941 Washington, PA. but it list him as widowed with no mention of Hannah. The cemetery printout of the Pounds family does not have Hannah listed.
This is very limited information but was hoping someone might see a connection. One small lead (not proven just memories from years ago), Hannah seemed to be cousins to Roupe Family.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
My name is Pamela (McClelland) Montgomery. I am trying to trace my roots. My great, great grandfather's name was Jack or possibly John McClelland possibly born around the early 1800's, but not sure where in Ireland. They came to the USA in the early to mid 1800's.
My Grandfather's name was John George McClelland, he was one of 14 children, some where born in the USA but now sure how many, but he was born in the USA on August 31, 1898 died July 12,1989, in the Pittsburgh area of Pennsylvania, USA. He was in the U.S Calvary. I also remember when I was in my very early teens and my grandparents took me to see the McClellan saddles at the National Cemetary in Washington, D.C. and my grandpap smiled and said that he was related to us.
My Father's name is James Joseph McClelland, born Dec. 12, 1922 and is still currently living in the Pittsburgh area of Pennsylvania, USA.
My father doesnt have too much information on the family from my great grandfather and earlier. My Dad regrets not getting this information off my grandparents before they passed away. My husband and I where hoping to fill in the blanks to finish the family tree. Your site got us excited and would like to find the rest of our long lost family to close the Gap. We would like to give this too him as a birthday present by his 85th birthday if not sooner.
Hope to hear from you soon,

Dear Mr McClelland,

I am interested in the geographical origins of the MacLellans in Scotland and in any dispersals there before the emigrations. There are Protestant MacLellans/McClellands (however one spells the name) for example whose locations in Gaelic Scotland I do not know. Neither do I have yet a general picture of where they came to rest in the new world (inc. Aust and NZ). I am working on a text of an academic nature and enjoy spreading the credit, if not money.

Dear Dave,
This is a long shot I know, but I am trying to trace the birth mother of my Grandfather who was adopted at birth by a family named Graham, who I think were Galloway farmers.
All I know of this woman is that she was unmarried and her own mother was a titled lady. This woman - his mother, was sent to London to have the child, which was subsequently adopted.
I have learned from different family sources that the title of this family was either McClellan or McClelland and that they lived in the Perth area and owned lands in Galloway. They are also believed to have some form of connection with the Queens Hotel in Perth.
Any assistance in this matter would be appreciated!

From: "Joan Duncan" <lduncan1@elp.rr.com>
Dear Dave,

For over 27 years, I've been searching for my g.g.grandmother,
HARRIET MCCLELLAN[D]. By census I can track her to Warren
Co., Oh. First record was her marriage to Rheu Clark, of Waynesville, Warren Co.,Ohio- -July 1834. Her name was spelled McLellan. Her date of birth was 12/22/1817 declared Ohio on one census record and Va. on another.

She and Rheu Clark had 9 children, 2 boys and 7 girls, Catherine was next to the youngest and my g.grandmother. Their boys were William, b1843 and John Milton, b.1847. They lived in Waynesville, Oh. until period between 1850 and 1860 when they moved to Jacksonburg, Wayne Co., Indiana. Rheu was listed as one of two waggonmakers in the county.

They lived in the little village of Jacksonburg the rest of their lives and are buried at the church cemetery about a quarter mile down the road.

The most important clue I've found over all these research years was guests in their Waynesville home in the 1840 census.

Adam McClellan; Charles and wife Susan and John McClellan and they were all born between 1810 and 1820. Harriet, we know was born Dec. 1817.

I found a Charles this age in Wooster, Wayne Co. Oh. in later census records. He was son of Charles and Margaret Brown or Brownfield McClellan. Charles Sr. was b.1775 in Pa. and was the son of John and the grandson of John. Does ANYONE have any clues about a dau. of Charles and Margaret named Harriet?

Kindest regards for any ideas. Joan Duncan

They had siblings Ellen/John/Margaret/Catherine Jane/Mary Ann(my Grandmother)/Robert/Maria/William/Thomas. between 1862/1882.

Hello David,
I am updating an earlier message following a change of e-mail address.
I have researched my own line of McClelland's back to Dailly and Barr in
Ayrshire.
My great grandfather was the Rev. Sylvester Mackie McClelland b. 1828
Dailly, left Scotland in the "Disruption" to become Presbyterian Minister in
South Shields, Durham, England. One descendant, Dr Hamish McClelland still
lives in the area.
Sylvester's father was Hugh McClelland, 1783-1847, miller of Dailly,
Ayrshire (his tombstone is in the Dailly church cemetery). Two other sons
Thomas b.1825 and Sylvester b. 1828 who I have no records of, possibly
emigrated.
I have possible earlier ancestors in the village of Barr near Dailly,
Ayrshire.
I would be pleased to hear from anyone researching McClellands in Ayrshire.

Hi Dave. Like many people who have posted a message to your "Find a
McClelland" page, I don't have much to go say about my McClelland ancestry.
I know only that the name of my g.g.grandmother on my mother's side of the
family was Imogene McClelland, who was born in Scotland. This information
is from the death certificate of my g.grandfather, John H. Monsees, who died
in New York City in March 1909, age 60. His father was said to have been
John Henry Monsees, a native of Hanover, Germany. When and where Imogene
McClelland married John Henry Monsees, I don't know. Based on John, Jr.'s
approximate date of birth, i.e. 1849, I believe his parents were born
sometime between 1820-30 in their respective places of birth, but I also
don't know when either of them came to the U.S. I know of only one brother
of my John H. Monsees, Jr. and he was David D. Monsees, b.ca. 1860, since he
was age 20 at the time of the 1880 NYC census, and was residing with his
brother John H. Monsees and John's family. I've also recently learned that
they may have had a sister named Clara Bella Monsees, b. ca. 1856, but we
haven't really been able to confirm that thoroughly, but the names of her
parents from her death certificate more or less match the ones on my
g.grandfather's death cert. Any clues would be nice. Please reply to

Dear Dave:
It was really neat to find this web page, and I thought perhaps you might
have some information concerning my adoption, or might be able to help me
find that information.
I was born a MCClelland in Arlington Va. October 1st 1956, I have a brother
that was adopted with me that was also born a MCClelland on Nov. 15th 1957.
I do not know all the particulars, but I do know that we both were adopted
in Charlottesville Va. sometime between 1961-1962. Although it would be
nice to get to know who my family is, I really need to get medical
information due to some medical problems that I am currently experiencing.
I do know that my parents dropped Ralph and I on the doorstep of a foster
home, and that there is a possiblity that other siblings were adopted out as
well, due to some problems that my parents were having, and that they
couldn't keep us.
If you know of anyone that is in that area that might have information about
my family, it would be helpful to find out.

My name is Owen Evans, from Derby UK. My mother is a McClelland, and has been tracing the family in Ireland. Her father was Alexander Esdale McClelland, who was an expert in wire ropes used in coal mines, and became head of the Safety in Mines Research Establishment. His father was Professor John Alexander McClelland of Dublin, a noted experimental physicist. He worked with J J Thomson and Ernest Rutherford at Cambridge UK around 1900, and did much work on promoting the study of science in Ireland. He died at the age of 50 in 1920, and the family was split up. Apparently my grandfather had to spend a summer living in a tent on Howth hill outside Dublin!

We have no direct conections in the New World as far as I know, but any information relating to JAMcC and his family would be much appreciated. His other children were Dorothy, Peggy, Alison and John.

Dave,
Another McClelland. I don't have a lot of information but I'll pass to you what I have.
My great Grand Father who's name I don't remember was in the Navy. I remember as a child he was in a wheel chair and usually wore a Navy Uniform with a bunch of hash marks on the sleeve. He spent his days at the Navy Hospital in Philadelphia(I believe). His son my Grandfather was Thomas McClelland and lived in Philadelphia, Pa then moved to Almonesson, New Jersey. I know he had a sister named Rose but I don't know much else. I remember as I grew up we visited relatives in Northen New Jersey, Philadelphia, Maryland and Delaware. I had an Aunt and Uncle we visited frequently in Delaware, Jim and Lilian. He(Thomas) was married to Mary. They had 2 sons Donald and Charles.
Donald my father, served in the US Navy as an Electronics Technician during Korea and was stationed on the USS Albany (CA-123). He married Grace Youngkin of Philadelphia and had 5 children, Donald, Grace, Richard, Kenneth and David. The family lived in Almonesson(Deptford), New Jersey.
The eldest Donald(Me) joined the Navy during the vietnam conflict. I served a 20yr career in Submarines as a Missile Technician, serving aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln(SSBN602), USS Michigan(SSBN727) and USS Tennesse(SSBN734). I retired in 1995, and took a position with Intel Corporation. I have 2 children Thomas Wolfgang and Samantha Almeda. Thomas is with Nicole Celerdo and has a son named Faolon(Irish:Little Wolf). Grace lives in Erie, Pa. She has worked in Law enforcement starting as a New Jersey State trooper to her current position runhing a childrens correctional facility. Richard has been a mechanic all of his life and has lived in New Jersey, Virginia and settling in Pittsburgh, Pa. Rick has one son Rick. Kenneth lived in New Jersey then moved to Naples, FL and was killed in an automobile accident. David lives in Pittsburgh, Pa and has one son named Kenneth. That covers the 5 of us.
Charles my uncle(Dons brother) owned a number of bars in New Jersey, including Westmont Inn(Westmont), Jimmy Crickets(Ocean City) and a couple I don't remember. He never married nor did he have any children(As far as I know).
Thats about all I know.
Thanx

Hi I am Doug McClelland from Annapolis, Maryland. It seems that you have been caught up in the maelstrom of my famous uncle David McClelland of Cambridge, Mass the psychologist. I like hundreds of other people would like to thank you for all your hard work on the website. Dave would be amused by all the clamor, as he was generally a quiet and reserved type of guy. Even thou he had I think four PhD's to his credit, he was a normal type of guy that would love to go have a steak and beer dinner with you. And the pages that you added will I hope clear up the matter for a lot of people.

Our branch of the McClellands comes from Glenluce, Scotland in the 1860's. I have to my good fortune a handy reference on my clan's existence in the form of an autobiography that was created by my great grandfather Charles Paul McClelland.

There were three MaClellan brothers that migrated from Glenluce, Scotland to America. Alexander came in 1868, David in 1870 and Charles Paul in 1871. Alexander MaClellan was a Gardner for a large nursery in Dobbs Ferry, NY. Charles Paul started as a store clerk in Dobbs Ferry and went on to be a lawyer, New York state senator and finally a Supreme Court judge in the US Custom Court of Appeals. Charles the judge had two children Meade and Charles Paul II.

Somewhere in the 1880's judge MacLellan changed the spelling of his name to McClelland. He used to spell his last name as MacLellan not MaClellan and then changed it to McClelland. This was because he was surrounded by so many Irishman that constantly misspelled his name. Dave

My grandfather Charles Paul McClelland was a Methodist minister and president of MacMurry College in Jacksonville, Ill. He had a large family of five children. Charles Paul III(my father), David, Carol, Betty, and Janet. David had five children

Kate McClelland-Dole Morristown N.J.
Nicolas and Ducan Boston Mass.
Sarah McClelland - Santa Barbara,Cal
Jacob McClelland - Washington DC

My father Charles Paul McClelland and Hugh McClelland started the Clan MaClellan in America about 1982 from a conversation during a golf game in North Carolina. He would be absolutely be amazed on how popular it has become. Dick McClelland told me about 7 years ago that they had about 6,000 members worldwide, so who knows how big it is today. Hugh would recruit people at the highland games at Grandfather mountain and publish the news letter and my dad would keep track of the dues and make sure the newsletters were mailed out.

Dear Dave:
Like your site! I need some help doing some research, and maybe someone out there can help. Here goes! I am looking for Henry McClelland. He is my Great, Great, Great, Grandfather. As My Great, Great, Grandfather Marcellus G. McClellan was born in 1827, He {Henry}had to have been born sometime in the late 1700's to early 1800's. My G,G,Grandfather Marcellus G. was born in Erie, Co. PA. and on his death cert. Henry McClelland is listed as his father. The only Henry McCleland I have been able to find in PA. is the 1790 census Part II in Sadsbury Twp Chester, PA. {and in the file it is spelled with one "l" after"e"}{ that is not unusual with our name.
You probably have ancestors that A county Clerk spelled McClellan, Clelland & ect: <http://www.gate.net/~pascalf/mccle.html> has A Henry McClellan as being born 02/20/1750 & died in Upper Octorara, Chester,Co PA. but if that is the one he was 77yrs. old when he fathered my G,G,G,Grandfather,"I don't think so". Bonnie Lacey Has one in the fairly close time frame, but no positive record, or list of offspring.
Here is what I have so far. 1. My Father: Robert Henry McClellan, Born: Van Tassle, Wyo.1914 Died Spokane, WA. 1992. Married: {my Mother still living} no siblings. Served USAAF in England WWII. 2. His Father: Marcellus G. McClellan: {named after his Grandfather}Born: Sheldon, IA. 1882 Died: Emporia, KS.1943. Homesteaded the Y-3 ranch in Niobrara Co. Wyo. Married to Maude Long. Children: Robert, Lloyd, & Josephine. 3. His Father Elbert H. McClellan Born: Erie, Co. PA. 1853 Died: Sheldon, IA. 1917. Married to Carolyn G.{Gracie}Reddell. Children: Marcellus, Levi & Freddie who died in infancy of Diptheria. 4. His Father: Marcellus G. McClellan: Born: Erie, Co. PA. 1827, Died: O'Brien, Co. IA. 1889. He was A Sgt in Co"L" 137th NY infantry during the Civil War. Married to Rachel Brush. Children: Elbert, William, Nettie, Grace & 2 who died in infancy. 5. His Father: Henry McClelland: Born: UNK. Died:UNK. "But we know he had at least one offspring! "Marcellus" cause it's in the books! That's tha' Ulster Irish McClelland's for ye, disgrace a lass & dissappear!
Any Help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED! And if anyone wants more info. on the Sheldon, IA. McClellans I will gladly share what I have.
A warning! I got all excited and bit hard on the "RootsWeb" thing! Here is what I have to pass on! IF IT AINT IN THE ARCHIVES TAKE IT WITH A GRAIN OF SALT! Best Regards!

Hi Dave and Jane

Just thought I would drop you a line as your site caught my eye. My Mother was a McClelland, she was one of 12 (9 girls and 3 boys) and one of her brothers had two boys called Paul and - you've guessed it - Dave McClelland! I know my cousin has some of his music on the web and was looking around for it and came across your site. Congratulations on your wedding by the way you all looked like you were having a fab time. Both my mother and father came from Dublin Ireland and my mother's edlest brother Joe McClelland disappeared under mysterious circumstances when my mother was quite small I would think around the mid 1940's. The rumour was he went away to America, so I am always intrigued when I come across the name in case there is any connection. By the way I am also a keen amateur (occasionally I get paid jobs though!) actress, so was interested in your theatre resume.

Anyway sorry for taking up your time. Hope you find the above of some interest.

Best regards

Dave,
My great-grandmother was Lillie Ann McClellan (married name Hunt), I believe born in Vermont, or possibly Canada. I have some interesting information on the history of the Clan MacLellan, which came from a distant relative in Maine. The name MacLellan is derived from that of Fillan or Faelan, a Scottish saint of Irish orinin, commemorated on January 9 and especially venerated at Cluain Mavscua, County Westmeath, Ireland, and so early as the 8th or 9th century at Strathfillan, Perthshire, Scotland. The Gaelic form of the name is MacGill' Fhaolain (son of the servant of Fillan). The name is variously spelled as follows: MacLellan, McLellan, McLelland, McClelland, McClellan. The name Cleland is also derived from the same source.

According to the book "The Scottish Nation" by William Anderson, 'MacLellan is a surname of considerable antiquity in the south of Scotland. The MacLellans of Bombie, at one period of great power and influence, and supposed originally to have come from Ireland, were in ancient time sheriffs of Galloway. Duncan MacLellan is mentioned in a charter of Alexander 11 in 1217. Among the faithful adherents who followed Sir William Wallace when he sailed from Kirkcudbright for France, after his defeat at Falkirk in 1293 was MacLellan then the Laird (Lord) of Bombie. The family became so flourishing about the beginning of the 15th century that, there were no fewer than fourteen knights of the name in Galloway at the same time.'

'This family, once very powerful in Galloway, possessed several castles, one of which, now in a ruinous state, built in 1582 by Thomas MacLellan of Bombie, stands in the town of Kirkcudbright. Sir Patrick MacLellan, proprietor of the barony of Bombie, incurred forfeiture in consequence of marauding depreations on the lands of the Douglases, Lords of Galloway. His son, Sir William, incited by the proclamation of James 11, offered the forfeited barony to any person who should disperse a gand of gypsies who infested the country, and capture their leader, dead or alive, received back his patrimony on carrying to the King the head of their captain on the point of a sword. To commemorate the manner in which he regained the barony, he adopted as his crest an erected right arm, the hand grasping a dagger, on the point of which was a Moor's head couped, proper: with the motto, "Think On", intimating the steadiness of purpose with which he had meditated his enterprise.'

I have quite a lot more information. Let me know if you're interested. I'd be happy to share it with you.

I am Ray(mond) Lee McClelland, born on 4/15/66 in Council Bluffs, IA. I have 2 brothers Ron Eugene McClelland (born on 7/31/69), & Rex David McClelland (born on 2/5/80). My parents Names are Jack (no middle name) McClelland(born 7/11/47) & Sherry McClelland. My father has 3 brothers, & one sister.  Mike (no middle name) McClelland, Steve McClelland, Kim McClelland, & Thomas McClelland. His father's name was Raymond Jack McClelland & mother Katherine McClelland.  His fathers(Raymond Jack McClelland) name was Raymond (known as Muggs) McClelland (born in 1900) & wife Esther McClelland (maiden name Hanson(e) (born in 1902) both passed away in Honey Creek, IA.

I remember some stories when I was little about how muggs came across on a wagon to IA from WA.(I think) It was mentioned that they had there timber land for a $100.00 an acre somewhere around Wenatchee,Wa.(Just here say from when I was real young). Please add us all to your list. And if anyone has any information at all please contact me at <walleyeguide@mcclellandoutdoors.com>

Hi!
This line of Mcclellands starts with Daniel & Emma sailing from Scotland for the Carolinies in 1773...the ship, losing its way, landed in Pennsylvania. They proceeded to Marsh Creek Settlement (nowdays called Gettysburg) and from there to Conecocheague Settlement and on west to Indiana Co., Armstrong Co., Jefferson Co. Their son James was born at Marsh Creek Settlement in 1774 to Elizabeth Armstrong.
Anyone interested can email me (bleep@ewol.com) for more stuff.

Hi

I know you have heard this before but wow your site is very nice and full of all kinds of stuff
I am Donna McClelland, I was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts at a Navel Hospital there. All I know about my McClelland side of the family is that I have a father named Miles (Mac) McClelland he was in the Coast Guard, retired now, last known to live in Ohio I think it is spelled Beuna,Ohio or something close to that, he did remarry and has a son Matthew who is in Germany last I heard in the military and is married. The funny thing is he is close to my age I will be 36 as of 1/17/02.
I have a sister Tracey and a brother Scott, and our mom's name is Jeanne. I have no idea how to start this or end it but this is all I know and I really would like to find out more about my family, I was also told by my sister that my father does have a brother but I do not know his name and he lived or lives in P.A.....thank you for your time and energy you put into your site, I had to come back today just to finish looking at the site.

Hope the Holidays were good to you and yours.

August 26, 2001 additions...

Just found your website and think someone out there may be able to help me locate another lost McClelland. I am looking for any and all information on a John or Johnny McCelland who served in the airforce in WWII and was stationed at Hill Air Force Base in Ogden, Utah between 1945 and 1947. I believe he came from Texas and still may have family there. He may be deceased and could have been killed in the Korean Conflict. I was born in 1947 and am looking for my father's family. I believe he died possibly between the years of 1948 and 1957. His name was John (Johnny) McClelland or McCallum or something close to those surnames. He probably came from Texas and may still have family there. He served in the US Air Force in World War II and was stationed at Hill Air Force Base in Ogden, Utah somewhere around 1946-1948.  If anyone has any information or can direct me to a source, I would very much appreicate it. My email address is ccunninghame@bendcable.com. Thanks, so much! Your website is great!

Hi
My name is Hugh McCaw and I am looking for the Grandmother whom I never knew. Her name was Christina McClelland and she gave birth to my mother, Gabriella, on the 23rd May 1924 in 51 Lisburn Road, Belfast, Northern Ireland. Her birth was registered by a J. Mahood.
Christina was, I believe, a servant and she had my mother adopted by Hugh and Mary Brown. I presume that Christina herself was born in the early years of the 20th century.
There was a family called Patterson who lived in Shamrock Street off the Ravenhill Road who looked after my mother for a while but we know little of them except that one emigrated to Australia.
I do not have any other knowledge of Christina or what happened to her and I would be grateful if anyone could help me in my search to find out about her to ease the burden that her daughter, my mother, has carried with her all her life.
Many, many thanks for anything that anyone may know.

Hi there,

Just had a look at your McClelland web page, sent to me by my son, David, who works in Dublin, Ireland for Compaq Computers. Does a bit of web design too.
He designed mine, for my business. Take a look - www.spinnaker-films.co.uk

I live in Limavady, N. Ireland - about 17 miles from Londonderry. I grew up on a small farm just outside Belfast and believe that I'm a direct descendant of the early planters of Ulster. A Sir Robert McClelland was granted lands in the area where we lived and I believe he allocated them. Sir Robert had a castle near where I now live but it's gone now. He also had lands in Donegal. My brother, who lives in Toronto, has quite a bit of research on our family and is currently preparing a family tree. His name is Dr. Frank McClelland and his e-address is -103246.262@compuserve

I've not had time to look at all the information on your site but when I do perhaps I'll get back to you.

With best regards,

James McClelland. james@spinnaker-films.co.uk

Hi,

As a fellow McClelland, I have a little information for you.
My Uncle did some research that led him to a stately home/castle in the
southwest of scotland, that was owned by a MacLellan. Now we did not
discover the reason, but he was shamed, murder or and affair with a lower
class is suspected, the history is foggy. It is said that in his shame he
fled to Ireland, where he adopted the Irish spelling of McClelland,
(scottish being MAC irish McC to) and began a new lineage. After this we are
missing about 100 years, but my Great Granfather moved here to England after
the first world war.

Hope your research goes well

is Robert E. McClelland just wondering what the McClelland plaid is and
other interesting facts about the McClelland heritage if you have any.
Thanks, Megan

I have been looking for the parents of William McCLELLAND for 30 years to no avail. He was born (I think) in Cecil County MD, 1791, married Sarah Wilson there in 1816, and died in Polk Co IA in 1872. I have much on his life and on his wife's parentage, and many descendants. Also many photos and documents. I'll share any/all.

I know he was apprenticed to Lewis Miller to learn carpenter trade, and assisted Rev. John Wilson, his father-in-law in building a woolen mill, Wilson's home, and a home for he & his wife in 1812. they are still standing in New Leeds, near Elkton, Md. Have many photos of all of this.

If you have any info on his parents, it'll give me a whole new "handle" to work on after many years of frustration!!! Thanks.

Fermanagh, Ireland to New South Wales, Australia
My name is Valerie McClelland Anderson and I am hoping that your web-site might help me in my search for Archibald McClelland who was born in Fermanagh, Ireland in abt. 1836. Archibald's parents were William and Frances (Moore) McClellland. In 1853, at the age of 17, Archibald left Ireland for Australia. On Nov. 3, 1869 in Young, New South Wales he married Eliza Corbett. Eliza's parents were Joseph and Ellen Corbett. At the age of 36, on January 4, 1872 Archibald McClelland died of brain fever at O'Brien's Hill, Grenfell, New South Wales. Archibald was a miner. I believe that Archibald and Eliza had one son born in 1870 named William Joseph McClelland.

NEWS FLASH! NEWS FLASH! NEWS FLASH! NEWS FLASH!
Just to let you know that the McClelland Genealogy has been selected for a series called GOING HOME with the Life Network and the History Channel. Dennis and I are off to Northern Ireland sometime in the month of November!
The History Channel wants a story with a historical spin, and the Life Network wants a dramatic story.
We (or possibly just I) will be featured on a weekly, half-hour television series that will follow Canadian families or individuals, the famous and not-so-famous, as they return to the country of their family's origins- sometimes for the first time in their lives, sometimes for the first time in generations, and sometimes, to renew friendships with close friends and relatives. (In our case it will be for the first time in our lives and I believe the first contact since the early 1900's with our McClelland family in Northern Ireland.)
The series will be seen on both channels.
The documentary crew will film us in Canada as we prepare for our trip and we will tell them what we expect to learn from our journey. We will likely be followed to The Ulster American Folk Park. www.folkpark.com/main/html   A trip will be planned for us to this park where we will take a private tour and learn about the history of the area in the time (1863) that my family emigrated to Canada. From there we will go to the areas in the County of Fermanagh that I outlined to learn of my personal family history and I assume to meet with the McClelland family that I have been in contact with that stills lives in the area today.
I would like to thank my many McClelland relatives in Canada and the United States that have contributed to my research, especially my father Harold McClelland and his cousin Elmer McClelland. A special thank you also goes to Elizabeth McClelland in Northern Ireland who is presently contributing to further research in the County of Fermanagh.

Just found your page through google.com. I browsed through all your messages, and not a connection to be found that I can see! However, I'll soldier on, althought my trail's been cold for close to twenty years now. Here's what I know about Clan McClelland folks.

Andrew McC, farm labourer, married Margaret Orr in Scotland sometime before 1840.

Their son, Andrew, b.1840, ploughman, married Jane Leckie, b.1841. dairymaid, May 17, 1867 in Ballantrae, Scotland.
They had three sons - John b.Sept.15, 1872, Andrew b. March 2, 1876 and Robert.

Andrew and Jane's son, Robert, b.February 2, 1878, Ballantrae, married Euphemia (McNeill) Ferguson, b. January 3, 1884 in a house on Shore Street, Bowmore (Scotland) on January 9, 1908 in Chicago. They had 5 children: Andrew 1909-1912, Catherine 1910-1912, Robert 1912-1926, William 1914-1972, Edward 1918-1982. They moved to Manitoba,Canada in 1916.

Robert and Effie's son William (Bill) married Eleanor Walburn, 1927-1959. They had four children: Stuart, Lorne, Wayne and Darlene.

Edward married Violet Beedie. They also had four children: Allan 1941-1965, Roy, Robert and Gary.

Bill and Ed's kids are all married, most have kids of their own. I have all those stats as well, and will share if asked, but am more interested in whether or not anyone has any links to any of the ancestors. If so please contact us at themucks@mb.sympatico.ca

Think on! And thank you to Dave, it's the best McClelland page I've found in a year of looking (off and on!) The Church of Latter Day Saints also doesn't have any of this branch - at least not on line.

Well fiddle-dee-dee. No sooner had I sent off our ancestors when I realized that I neglected to mention a wee bit of (possibly) useful information!

Andrew and Robert McClelland came to N. America in 1908. They shortened their name to 'Clelland'. Andrew moved to the Peace River district in Alberta in 1928. We don't know if he ever married or had any children, or if he ever legally changed his name. Robert didn't change his legally and in later years returned to using the "Mc" on the front. Ed and Stuart did legally change their names, the rest of us haven't

Hi, Lorne McClelland in Calgary, Alberta. I see you have my cousin Gary
from Saskatoon Sask. already listed. Their are a bunch of us
McClellands out here in western Canada. Most of us related one way or
another, an off shoot of the bunch from Owen Sound, Ontario. Gary has
been diligently researching all these people while I have been slacking
off building fences, laying sod, etc. all the things you do when you
foolishly buy a new house.

Dave, thanks for a great website! I'm a McClelland by marriage.(noting your "contest" we usually get "McCleveland" - maybe it's a Wisconsin thing)

I've started to research family history and hope your site can yield some answers. Most of our family are from central Wisconsin. (g-grampa) Grant was a cheesemaker in Waushara County. (grampa) Merrill (nicknamed Penny) farmed in the town of West Bloomfield, Waushara County. My inlaws, Vernon Louis and Mardell (Bauer), lived in the Bloomfield/Weyauwega area all their lives.

I'm stymied when it comes to Grant's parents. We know his father's name was John. The family story is that he married and American Indian woman who was Grant's mother. The children from John's 1st marriage moved to California when his second marriage took place. Any hints would be appreciated. email me at donnamac_1@excite.com. Thanks.

Hi, thank you for the great web page. My gr. great grandfather was Capt.
James A. McClelland. His wife was Juliiet. He was born bet. 1780-1800. His daughter Jane D. McClelland, born C. 1824 in PA married Liberty Washington Cole. They all ended up in Clayton Co., IA. I would very much appreciate any information on this family.

I have McClellands in my family ancestry but know very little about them.
Mary McClelland (probably born abt 1790-92), on June 21, 1808 married Jesse Clark (b. 1789) in South Louisiana or moved to the St. Landry Parish, LA area after marrying.

Mary's parents were James and Sarah (Andrus) McClelland. I do not know where the parents were born or where they lived. A lot of people in that area came from the Carolinas.

Still no luck on finding anything on my g-g-grandfather Cyrus Herron

I also have been searching for my "roots". My Grandfather was named James McClelland and his wife Mary Catherine was a Van Camp. My mothers name was Pansy and James was a railroad engineer.

The only info that I have gathered so far, is from her death certificate. I
found that her fathers name was James and her Mothers name was Mary Catherine McClelland and that the both came from Ohio, but my mother, Pansy was born in Iowa. I understood from an uncle that James was a Steam Engineer on the Railroad!

If any help can be given, I would appreciate it!

Hello David,
I have researched my own line of McClelland's back to Dailly and Barr in
Ayrshire.
My great grandfather was the Rev. Sylvester Mackie McClelland b. 1828
Dailly, left Scotland in the "Disruption" to become Presbyterian Minister in
South Shields, Durham, England.
His father was Hugh McClelland, 1783-1847, miller of Dailly, Ayrshire. Two other sons Thomas b.1825 and Sylvester b. 1828 who I have no records of, probably emigrated.
I have possible earlier ancestors in the village of Barr near Dailly,
Ayrshire.
I would be pleased to hear from anyone researching McClellands in Ayrshire.

Dave hello from Iowa, we just recently got on line and found your web site. We also are working on finding information on our ancestors. I have come to a stand still, My gggrandfather was B.F. (Benjamin Franklin) McClelland, who lived and died in Bristow,Iowa. My Grandfather was Leslie McClelland from Clarion,Iowa as was my ggrandfather John  F. McClelland. We have traced B.F.'s birth to Elgin,Illinois, were he was in the civil war. He married Mrs. Ida-Marie Harris she came from Tiffin,Ohio. According to B.F.'s obit. he had two sisters, Elizabeth Mathews of Cedar Falls Iowa and Mrs. Mary Malier of Fairdale, Illinois. If any body has any info please e-mail me at macfamly@netins.net Thankyou

Another Branch on the McClellan(d) Family Tree!
Alexander Colin McClellan born April, 1859 in Prince Edward Island, Canada. Emmigrated to America in 1876 and married in 1885 to Emma Anne Hoye in Vernon County Missouri. Children, Florence (February, 1888) and Henry Donald (July, 1890).

Family moved to Spokane, Washington after 1891. Alexander Colin worked for various railroads there as a carpenter and later, car inspector, until the Washington and Oregon RR was sold to the Union Pacific in 1910. His last known address was Belmont, Idaho and I cannot locate a death certificate for either Alexander or wife Emma.

Does anyone out there have any information about Alexander Colin McClellan??? Thanks! Holly McClellan Reynolds, <mailto:bill_holly@yahoo.com>bill_holly@yahoo.com

Dave,

My name is Kevin Andrew McClelland. I am 32, and was born and raised in Orange County, California. I continue to live in Southern California, and own and operate a software consulting firm. My father, Robert Harold McClelland (equally born in Orange County, CA) has been in residential construction and development for the past 30 years. My grandfather, for whom I have never met (he passed away in the 40's) was a master carpenter, and served in the US Navy during WWI, on a submarine based
out of San Diego. It is my understanding that that majority of my family originated in the Pennsylvania region, and had some ties to the Thompson's of Pennsylvania.

I enjoyed your site, and look forward to returning in the near future!

Best Regards,

Kevin McClelland

Greetings,
Looking for the ancestors of Dawson McClelland, born Burke County, Ga.,
June 1850. I know that his mother was named Nancy. He married Susan
Kelly and they had five children: Etta Almeta, John, Wiliam, Marshall,
and Georgia.

After Susan Kelly McClelland died Dawson remarried a second time. His
second wife, unknown, buried him in Harmony Cemetery, Manassas, Ga.
Dawson was my great great grandfather. His daughter Etta Almeta married
Frederick Utley Feb. 6, 1891. Their daughter Eula Mae Utley was my
grandmother.

Greatly appreciate any info on Dawson's parents and grandparents.

From: "Valerie Anderson" <vjanderson@sk.sympatico.ca>

Dave,
Great to see your new format. My name is Valerie McClelland Anderson. I had sent you some information about a year ago for your web site and since then my e-mail address has changed to vjanderson@sk.sympatico.ca I would appreciate it if you could remove my last message (done-Dave) or at least update it with the following information that I have discovered.
I am searching for ancestors of William McClelland born about 1800 in the county of Fermanagh and died August 17, 1892, most likely buried at Derrygonnelly Cemetery, Fermanagh. His wife was Frances Moore. In 1835 I believe that William was the Churchwarden of Devenish. In the 1841 Census of Aughakeeran, Derrygonnelly parish of Devenish shows a William, wife Francis and children Ann, James, Noble, William Jr. (my great grandfather) Robert, George, Hugh and Sarah. I believe there were eleven children in the family and the other names were Archibald, Thomas and unknown. The McClelland family is recorded at Drumcrow East in County of Fermanagh in 1862. By the late 1800's this family seems to have left Drumcrow East and moved to nearby Caldrum.
About 1863 my great grandfather William McClelland Jr. came to London, Ontario. On May 2, 1870 he married Elizabeth Wright and a few days later joined the Red River Expeditionary Force to put down a threatened rebellion against the Canadian Government in Manitoba. After release from the army, he returned home to London and once again returned to Manitoba to set up farming near Letellier, Manitoba on the Marais.
William and Elizabeth had eleven children: Francis, William, Joseph, George, Susan (Doll), Thomas, Hugh, Robert (my grandfather), Ruth, Charles, Annie Ellen (Nell).
William's brother George also came to Ontario. George married Lucinda Johnstone. George and Lucinda had four children: James (Franklin), Annie, Lucinda and Sarah Vera.

It is possible that a brother Thomas also came to Canada and was a coachman somewhere in Ontario.
Please contact Valerie Anderson at my e-mail address vjanderson@sk.sympatico.ca if you can provide further information.

Hi David,
I am Kathryn Mary McClelland Bojanowski. I am the daughter of Robert Patterson McClelland who was the son of William Frances McClelland and Isabel Ryan.
His grandfather was an Irish immigrant named David McClelland. David was a vet for the Baltimore City (Maryland,USA) Police department in the late 1800s. He took care of the mounted policemen's horses. There seem to be a great number of William Frances, David and Robert McClellands out there, including in my own family. I'd love to hear >from anyone to whom any of this sounds familiar.

I found your interesting web page the other day and thought I would drop you a line. My name is David McClelland as was my Father and Son and is my grandson's. In reading your page it seems that David is a popular first name with the McClellands. My McClelland's are from Pennsylvania, Armstrong County. GGGrand father John McClelland, GGrand father James Moore McClelland, Grand father Howard Jameson McClelland, Father David Nelson McClelland. Have no idea of any further back, Grand father was a farmer and his father was a medicine man. My father was an Engineer, civil, and died in the army working on the Alaskan highway in 1943. I will check your page once in a while to see if any new families surface.

Hello everybody,
I have several more McClelland's to add to the list. My name is Robert S. (Bob) McClelland and I was born 8/24/62 in Pittsburgh, PA. My brother Richard R. McClelland was born on 11/24/57 also in Pittsburgh. My sister Sharon A. McClelland was born 2/24/70 in Chicago, Illinois. My parents are John Robert McClelland ( he changed his name in grade school to Robert John) born 7/4/34 and my mother is Dorothy E Hlister born 11/24/37. Both are originally from Pittsburgh, PA. My Grandfather was Richard J McClelland and served in the Navy during W.W.II. He passed away in 1981 in his late 60's or early 70's. He lived the last years of his life in Butler, PA and I believe he lived most of his life in that area of PA. My dad had a brother James who was born a couple of years after him, but was killed in a fight in the early 70's in downtown Pittsburgh, PA. He was survived by his 3 children, Jimmy (who died in the late 70's), Barbara, and Carol.
If anybody has any additional information about my line of the family, please e-mail me at bobmcclelland@hotmail.com. Nice website.

I have traced McClellands back to Carnmoney Presbyterian Church, County Antrim, Ireland. I have found several McClellands and McConnells who were members of this church. I have Sarah born 1743 in Carnmoney, County Antrim. I have the name and address of the minister for the church there and have been in correspondence with him.
I have several Mary Ross records who were members of this church also. I have ordered a copy of this microfilm from the PRONI (Public Records Office of Northern Ireland) in Belfast.
I will be more than eager to share any data that I find on these families. I would also like to know of your research successes...

Hi, Yes I am another McClelland by birth, though my surname is McKay.
I am interested in contacting any McClellands related to a David McClelland who emigrated from the Belfast area of Northern Ireland in the early 1960s (probably to Canada) as he could well be my Father.
My Mother was a widow with four other children living on the Shore Road area at the time of my birth in September of 1961. My Father emigrated sometime in either 62 or 63 possibly later. My mother felt that she could not uproot the rest of the family at that time so did not go with my father. We subsequently moved back to her original home area of North Wales so all contact was lost.
Info related to this David McClelland, he was quite tall with ginger/reddish brown hair and at the time he lived in Belfast was involved in books as a way of employment. Age range now 65-80.
I can be contacted on Anniemac61@microsoft.com. Hope someone out there can help.

Found a McClelland!!!
Actually, it is me, Jenny, a McClelland who managed to migrate all the way to the west coast of Canada. The earliest knowledge I have of my family is the name of my great grandfather, named Vernon McClelland, who was born in Ontario, of Irish Protestant background. He moved to Watson, Saskatchewan, then to the Okanagan valley in B.C, where he continued ranching (horses, for the most part, I believe...).
I am the second granddaughter of his first born son, Donald Vernon McClelland, who was born in 1920, in Watson, to Vernon and his first wife, Odessa. My father is Don's only son, James Clifford McClelland (but everyone calls him Jim or Jimmy) who was born in Kelowna, B.C, in 1947.
Because my father contracted spinal meningitis during infancy and lost partial hearing, he grew up in Vancouver, at Jericho Hill School for the deaf and blind.
I, Jenny Miriam McClelland, was born in Abbotsford, B.C., in 1974, and after spending the earlier part of my life in the greater Vancouver area, I moved to beautiful Victoria, B.C. to complete my post secondary education at UVic.
I am interested in connecting to anyone in my near or distant family, to learn more of my history, or to share what little else I know with other members of my clan.
Thanks for posting such a wonderful page; you have taken a humdrum, rainy day and turned it into a bit of a trip down memory lane. You have reaffirmed my pride in my family name, and I welcome any replies to my email address: jennym@uvic.ca
Cheers!

Hello my name is David McClelland also, and this may seem silly but I noticed on your webpage that all the links were verified on Feb. 24 which is my birthday ooooooh weird. I am a highland games heavy events athlete, and I compete wearing a McClelland tartan. Just thought I would introduce myself. More from David... I got my kilt from http://www.macleodsscottish.com/ Maclellan ancient. My only tip when buying a kilt is to measure yourself carefully, It can make all the difference. You would have to check the prices on the website, I think I paid about 400$US for mine? I just had a competition this weekend and my girlfriend took some great pictures, so when I get them developed I would be more than happy to scan them and send some to you. I should also mention that I am searching for a sponsor to pay for travel expenses-and in return I would wear a t-shirt in the competitions advertising their products (I make a pretty good billboard I'm 6'7" tall and about 325lbs.) I am in the habit of asking everyone to see if they have any connections, so forgive me for asking you also.
thank you.

Dave's note... ANYONE WANT TO SPONSOR HIM? You can get see what he looks like at http://www.members.home.com/gunnar - he'd be a great billboard!!!

Seeking Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania McClelland's !! Was told that a Sarah McCleland [sp] was the Mother of my grandfather born as William James Thompson, but later raised under the name of Pratt. This is in the census of 1880. In the census of that year he was listed as a Grandson of Francis Mary Pratt and was age 6. Sarah McClelland is listed in the 1860 census as living with Timothy & Frances and being 7 years of age and attending school. Later in the 1880 she is listed as living next door to the Pratt's with her sister Ellen McCleland. A complete family mystery!! Any help appreciated. Thanks for an interesting page.

Hello David, I am attempting to research my grandfather's side of the family. (By the by, I have 4 brothers and one is named David.) My mother and father divorced when I was but 2 and tho we saw my fathers' family every year or so, I remember them well. My grandfather was a huge red-haired giant who spoke German/Irish and married an American Indian who was a teeny thing. Any way, I have a feeling the way we spell our name is probably not the way it was spelled when he was born with it. Please refer to the following. I am unable to confirm where my ancestors came from in Ireland.
Robert (b. 1805/1811? In Ireland) married to Isabella ______,? immigrated to Canada in 1842/1843/1844 with his younger brother Samuel (b. 1811/1818? In Ireland, d. Nov. 4, 1894 in Kincardine) married to Mary Miller (b. 1818/1821? died March 29, 1903 in Kincardine). Robert and Samuel settled in the Kincardine area however Robert, Isabella and their family if any seemed to disappear.
Samuel and Mary had the following children:
Robert Abrams (b.Jan.6, 1835, Erne Ireland, d. Jan.6, 1926, Gordon Lake) m. to Hannah Marie Haldenby (b.Jan.1,1844, Amherst Island, d. July 16, 1917, Gordon Lake)
John (b. 1842, Ireland, d. ?), m. Jane Stanley on March 13, 1867
Samuel (b.1844, Upper Canada, d. ?) m. Elizabeth Welsh in 1868
Abraham (b.1843?, Upper Canada, d. March 16, 1912) m. Elizabeth ëBessieí Briggs or Bridge (d. 1908)
Elizabeth (b.1848, d. Jan.21, 1912 in Detroit, buried in Kincardine), m. on Feb 23, 1864 Samuel McClure (b.?, d. Mar.12, 1882)
Matilda (b. 1850, d.?) m. on Nov. 14, 1867 James Crozier (b.? in Ireland, d.?)
Esther (b.1856 in Upper Canada, d.?)
Mary (b. 1867?)
Hannah (b.?), ** may have been a cousin
Robert and Mary moved to Northern Ontario (near Sault Ste. Marie) in 1870 or 1871 and had 14 in their family. I am related to this branch and have a lot of information on Robert and Mary.
What I need is information on Robert and Isabella. Where did they move? Where are they buried? Did they have any family? If so, where are they? Where did Robert and Samuel come from in Ireland? What is Isabella's last name?
I also would like information on the rest of the family, just to fill in the blanks. Any information is appreciated .

Hi there,
I'm wondering if we can exchange McClelland links. I have a genealogy page at http://members.xoom.com/genmommy My main area of research is my McClellan(d) line but its since branched out to include many other names.
Thanks,

I am interested in locating other McCLELLAND families originating in County Down, Northern Ireland. My ancestor was Andrew McClelland of Cottown. I also have another McClelland connection in Dublin, Ireland. Robert McClelland and his wife Annie Hamilton, one child, Caroline McClelland was born in Dublin in 1847 and came to New Zealand in 1877. Another child P. Hamilton McClelland lived in Medocino, California and died there in 1899.

My name is Elizabeth Marie McClelland Maxey. My father's name was Stanley David McClelland. My grandfather's name was Stanley Lorn McClelland. My great-grandfather's name was Lord Lorn McClelland. I would very much like it if I may be allowed to honour their name's here. If anyone has ever heard of, or knows anything about Lord Lorn McClelland, please contact me at LadyElizabeth19@hotmail.com
P.S. My grandfather once lived in Minnesota, and I think I just may be related to 'yall Canadians!

Hi! Looking for HUGH McCLELLAND, wife Charlotte, from PA in the late 1700s. Moved to Ross Co., OH in 1804. Had daughters Experience, Betsey, Ann, harriet, Elixabeth, and Nancy. Hugh Jr. married Susan Miler. They had a bunch of kids, also. Hi! I'm not a McClelland by name, but by Descent! Hugh McClelland was my great-great grandfather, from PA. He was born between 1850 and 1860, according to census information. He married a woman named Charlotte, from Maryland. Hugh and Charlotte had a son named Hugh in OA in 1800. They also had a daughter named Nancy, either a few years before or after, who was an "idiot", acccording to later probate and land records.
Hugh and Charlotte also had the following daughters: EXPERIENCE, Elizabeth, Harriet and Ann.
Experience was my great-grandmother. She married William Myler in Ross County, OH in 1836. They had a son John Milton Myler, who had Charles Milton Myler, who had Carol Myler, who had me, Rose Stavem.
In the 1830s, two more McClelland families moved to the area, headed my Moses and John McClelland. Lots of kids. Some info will share.
Does anyone have anything on this line? I have some land records and Hugh (Sr's) will, but nothing else to go on really for Hugh's ancestry. I don't know if they came for Ireland or Scotland or Cananda or Timbuktoo. Be happy to share all that I have; some church records, etc.
If interested, write me, and let me know YOUR family.

Our family link stems from Hugh McClelland who married Margaret clonmel ( date unknown ). George Stafford married into your family January 5th 1859 , by marrying Eliza Jane McClelland . Hi Dave.. I've written to you before, and it seems you've decided to turn your page into the McClelland spring board....That's great!
Here's a piece of the trail in my gene pool:
McClelland: Frances, David G Jr, Cindy, born Campbell, CA
Father: David G Sr. born Latrobe PA, bro/sis: Tom, Roy, Dolores, Sara Hana "Bunny", Luella. Deceased: Ken and Paul
our Grandfather: David W. McClelland, born (unk), died PA 1986
Past that... I don't know.
We have Moore, Riddle, Calahan, Pershing in the family tree, as well.
Most originate from PA, as far as I know. A good number of them are still there! Currently known locations of the Clan...PA, OH, MD, CA.
We do have artistic talent in the family..mostly singers, and a few sketch artists.
Does this ring anyone's bell out there??? poppy610@earthlink.com

I, too am a McClelland (pity those forced to use alternate spellings).
A David McClelland.
A David Allen McClelland.
I appreciate your website. I have found myself becoming more and more interested in my heritage; having an all-questioning 8 year old son forces me to "kick it up a notch". For the record, my father is Ronald William McClelland, born here in Canada, October 3/1918. He was in the R.C.A.F. for close to thirty years, and has lived in Kelowna B.C. with his wife Edna Mae (nee: Matheson) for the last 25 or so years.
WARNING: We may be starting to mutate; Donald Trump is my second cousin. (Matheson side )
I am the youngest (46) of three children and have a sister out your way in Amherst.
Good luck to you, and indeed: Think On!

Hi Dave,
I enjoy your McClelland site. I saw your picture in the family album, and you look like my brother Russell McClelland. Our father was Russell, grandfather was Alonzo, and great-grandfather was Alfred, who was a preacher in West Virginia. We have our family reunion in June 2000, at Babcock State Park in Clifftop, West Virginia, about ten miles >from where I was reared. So now you know that you have "Hillbilly" McClelland's.

My Dad, 1897-1987, was Burnie Clarence McClelland, born in Owen Sound, ON. My younger brother, Thomas Burnie, is Police Commisioner for the City of Kirkland Lake, ON.
Although we have a US address, I actually am a Canadian & live in Toronto. The postal references in my Biog. you posted are somewhat vague; in actual fact I am one of 9 of the outside Directors of Canada Post Corp (appointed by the PM) & one of the 12 who picks the Stamps for Canada, as a Member of the Stamp Advisory Committee (SAC) of Canada Post. I'll send you a jpeg of me unveiling the "Marco Polo" in Melbourne, Australia 2 months ago, with an RCMP officer from Yarmouth, NS. FYI.

Prior to June 18, 1999...

Thank you for putting together such an interesting webpage. I am Nancy MacClellan Sears, Recording Secretary of Clan MacLellan In America, Inc. I am in the process of researching my family. The family of William McClellan (my father changed our spelling to Mac) came from Scotland, leaving the River Dee at Kirkcudbright on the Ship Golden Rule in 1774. I've hit a snag connecting my great grandfather, but have documentation from my grandmother and from a distant cousin. I have found the website The USGen Web Project (http://www.usgenweb.com) very helpful.

Hey Dave,
I'm Shawn Patrick McClelland smcclelland@hotmail.com. I don't know much about my family and would welcome any information that is available. The only thing that I know for sure is that my father is John Patrick ( Beaumont, Tx), and that my Grandfather was Joseph Henry ( Crowley, La). I am from Morgan City, La and I am now living in Huntsville, AL. I work for the U.S. Space and Rocket Center as a Space Camp counselor. Please write to me if you have any information that can help me understand "Who I Am". Take Care!

I got to your web page from your posting to the Alt.genealogy Newsgroup: I have some ancestors who were McClellands -
One of my Great Great Grandmothers was Isabella McClelland of Alma Cottage, Belfast who married my Great Great Grandfather Robert Kennedy on 26 Oct 1860 at Tassagh Presbyterian church in Armagh. Her father was given as David McClelland (a Gentleman!) and they were married by another David McClelland - I thought they were the same person and rushed to get his Death Certificate, only to find he was a bachelor!
I guess the chance that you have either of these in your database is rather slim? I don't know anything about Isabella, though I have a picture - my guess is that she may have died in Scotland as that is where her son Gilbert Alexander moved to in 1900. (Husband died in 1901)
Any help welcomed

My name is Bob McClelland, and I suppose I would fit into the category of an "educational" McClelland. I am currently a Reader in Educational Technology at Liverpool Business School, Liverpool John Moores University, where I have worked for 25 years.
I have my own website at http://www.livjm.ac.uk/~busrmccl/me which you can check out.
Here at Liverpool Business School we think that we are well ahead with web developments for education, so your site was of particular interest to me.
In Liverpool there are not many McClelland's (approx 7 or 8 in the phone directory). I am from a large family (five sons one daughter), and I am the eldest. Mom and Dad are still around, brothers scattered throughout the country. Nice to see a site dedicated to our name (and spelling).
My son (who is 10) is about to undertake a project on himself for School. He (with me) is to develop a website, you will obviously be a link to that site. If you have any genaeology info, would be much appreciated.
Bob
