Find A McClelland

Latest Update: Sept 4, 2007

Make Poverty History!

Many people ask if I can help them trace their family roots. In most cases, I can't. So, I decided to try this - The "Find a McClelland" feature.

If you have ancestors you'd like to trace, send me an e-mail message, I'll post it here with your e-mail address so other McClelland Clan members can write back to you.

Send additions to me at Webmaster@McClellandMedia.com

At present this page is just a long list of messages from you, posted in the order I receive them, latest at the top. I would like to make this into a searchable database, but that will take some work. And with so many McClelland names, searching would be difficult anyway.

So you have to read... messages from other McClelland's, sharing what they know, hoping to find one more link in their family history. Good luck to you all!

NOTICE FOR ANYONE USING THIS PAGE

The following information has been provided by the contributors shown.

I cannot vouch for any of this information and cannot be held responsible for any errors
.
If your address is on here and you want to be removed, please e-mail to address above.

Try using the FIND function on your browser for this page - it may work, however some of the messages use abbreviations, so reading may be your only hope.

If an e-mail address in a message does not work, please let me know - I will attempt to find a correct address, but I will also leave messages with BAD addresses on this page in case the information it contains is of any use.

If you have success locating someone through this page, please let me know so we can share.

I wonder if anyone has been able to find any information about Martha Dale who was married to Col. John McClelland.
There has to be someone looking up information about the “Dale” Family.

Hey!
I was excited to find this website.
I am not by name a McClelland, but I am by blood. J
My GG Grandfather, William Henry McClelland 1847-1908 was born in Ohio. Birth Records indicate William Henry’s father was born in Scotland…however, upon researching census data, I find he (Thomas McClelland, GGG Grandfather) may have been born in PA.
GG Grandfather William Henry McClelland was a young soldier in the Civil War, joining in Bucyrus, OH 12th Calvary. After being wounded at King Salt Mines, VA, was taken prisoner and because of the wound to his leg, his leg was amputated.
GG McClelland then went to Lenawee Co., MI to be fitted for an artificial limb, which, I understand he was unable to use because the disease had set in so bad, an artificial limb was not feasible. (That is not a good visual!) Then William Henry McClelland went to Stanton, MI (Douglass Twp)..I don’t know if his parents were there, or if he was granted a land patent, moved there, then his folks moved there…?? I don’t know. If he would have gone to Lenawee Co., MI (35 min north of Ohio)…one would think he was from Michigan..???
William Henry McClelland then married a Chaffee (GG? to Roger B. Chaffee, Astronaut)… in Portland, MI.
Any who….(zzzzz, are you awake?) ha ha
Bottom Line: I am seeking William Henry McClelland’s father, Thomas McClelland’s gravesite. I don’t know if it’s in Ohio, PA, Michigan….
I don’t know where to look, or what to do next.
Any ideas?
Thank you.

Hi David the Webmaster McClelland,

I received an email from Bob McClelland with the information about the McClelland's. It caught my eye because my name is David McClelland , David Donald McClelland. How's that for Scottish? Fortunately I did not delete the email as it ended up in the Junk Mail. I will do some exploring of this site.

My Aunt , who is now in her 90's has been trying to trace our roots for years and has quite a collection of stories and information. I will ask her permission to send you her information or her email address. It is somewhat inaccurate since much of the information of unsavory characters was omitted (to keep our line pure). I warn you , the reading of the information is therefore disjointed and not as interesting as it could be.

Me; I am a retired Industrial Arts / Vocational Educator with background in the Air Force as an electronics technician. I noticed that many McClelland's have a musical background or interest. Me too. Since retirement I've taken up the Bluegrass banjo. After 2 years of practicing the 3 finger techniques I can play a recognizable " You are My Sunshine". We McClelland's are a stubborn lot..

I noticed also that there are a few practicing psychologists and Psychiatrists. My wife could use one or the other of them, maybe both. (Just to keep it in the family).

I live in Manitoba Canada and am a 3rd generation Manitoba McClelland. My siblings and I have all traveled extensively and have settled temporarily and some permanently in many parts of the world. Most are back in Canada now.

Will keep on the site. It is interesting.

David Donald McClelland. uncledave@westman.wave.ca

PS . The Coat of Arms that I am familiar with is somewhat different. See attached.

Dave's note: This is the Coat of Arms I was familiar with as well, my Dad had a painting of this version.

Hi there Dave-
I was just stumbling around the internet, looking for my brother's
website, ironically. Very reassuring to know there are more
McClellands around the globe! Do you know anything about a
McClelland's Pub, est. 1837- it's in Scotland. It's on this t-shirt i
have, and i'm never sure if it's a real place. any help/advice? Thanks
again, glad to have found this site!

Hi Guys,

Advice required on finding McClelland's in Ireland??

I'm stuck at JOHN McCLELLAND (McClellan), born 1840 in Ireland, married a SARAH JANE WEIR (born 1842) most likely in or near Aghalee, Antrim in the 1860's as Sarah was baptised in Aghalee on July 3, 1842.

Any info gratefully received, maybe John had Brother's and Sisters who emigrated to North America but my branch, John and Sarah emigrated to North East England!!

On a slightly related note, my bottle of McClelland's ten year old single malt whiskey is nearly empty!!! Although distilled and bottled in Scotland by Bowmore Distilleries, I'm finding it difficult to replenish my supplies. Any ideas!!?!?!

I am the owner of Bladnoch a small distillery in SW Scotland built in 1817 by John and Thomas McClelland. We get a lot of enquiries at the distillery from McClellands all over the world.
There are numerous gravestones in nearby Wigtown belonging to the McClelland family. I have a few pages of details of these people. Could I email you the details or post them somewhere on your website.

Hello Dave,

I previously sent you information re the McClelland family/descendants
living in the Skagit county, WA area. I wanted to let you know that my
e-mail address has changed -- the first one is sylvammns@hotmail.com
and the second e-mail address for me is sja64jha@aol.com.

You are doing a fantastic job for all McClellands. Thank you.

Some history facts re McClellands --
I have found three McClelland men mentioned in the records for
the Applegate Wagon Train to OR. Two of them turned off and went to CA
and the third was an old indian fighter by the name of Robert McClelland.
He died on the Columbia River trying to save the Applegate boy when
their raft overturned.

Also in the records of Lewis and Clark when they were going upriver
to the Mandan camp, they mention a trader by the name of McClillin. He is
also mentioned in their journals when they return.

Thanks again. Sylvia Ammons

Dave,

Just a note to let you know that the Clan MacLellan Association has a new web address: www.clanmaclellan.net

The .com version is defunct. Maybe you could change your link and post this info? Thanks so much,

Hullo!

My grandfather, John McClelland came from Northern Ireland but lived in Milngavie, near Glasgow for a long time - I think that he was involved with the paper mill there. More that that I do not know.

Bset wishes

you sound like a true McClelland, all take work and life very serious but do like to go on the 'hoi' (drink) (Hartlepudlian slang) every week end (at least). 2 of my brothers are school teachers, the other one is a fireman in London (so gets all the girls) my sister has worked for the govenment for the last 26 years (but we try not to hold it against her), I am a registered nurse, working with elderley, (????) , I reckon that being a McClelland is a good thing. I went up to see MacLellans Castle in Kirkudbright last March,-- bloody great. If you can afford to come over - do it. You will really enjoy. Never mind - we still have the best looking tartan - don't we? Love Ann McClelland xx mcclelland@ntlworld.com

Hi, my name is Nancy McClelland Schave. I live in Skagway Alaska. I have done extensive research on my McClelland line. I have visited Northern Ireland four times. My family lived in Conner/Kells, just southeast of Ballymena, Antrim. Joseph and Mary McClelland had Samuel, Thomas, John, Elizabeth, Agnes, James and William Alexander. Sam, Tom, Agnes came to the U.S. settling in MI. James and Wm came to western PA working as coal miners. Elizabeth married and stayed in the U.K. She died young and her husband remarried. All her sons except the first emigrated to Canada. After Joseph died, Mary (Lockhart) McClelland came to MI and stayed until her death. Elizabeth's oldest son actually emigrated to MI, but died there within a year of coming over--his name is on the same stone as his grandmothers. Thomas married Rachel in Ireland. They had no children. Samuel had no children. John, my gg had four. One died before adulthood, the second to go died in an accident in her 30"s. My grandfather had only one child, my father. The last of the four had no children, and died when quite old. James and Wm. emigrated to western PA where they had large families.
Wm came to PA first and then brought Mary Ayers over and married her. James was married to Sarah Cathcart in Ireland, went to Lanark, Scotland to work in the coal mines and then came to western PA.
I'd love to share all of my research with others who are interested, as well as make contact with people who are related.

Hi Dave:
Great page. Came across it quite by accident while killing some time in the office today. The mercury in the thermometer outside is hovering at a chilly 1 degreeF. and the community of Tupper Lake, where I live, is shivering. Our electricity was out the other day for about six hours in minus 20 degree temperatures, and we're still trying to get warm.
My name is M. Dan McClelland and I grew up in Napanee, Ontario. My father was Harold McClelland. His father was Earl McClelland and my grandparents had a great farm in Bath, Ontario, where I had many wonderful days growing up. Earl's parents were John and Jane McClelland, who emigrated from Ireland (Belfast?) late in the 1800s and they farmed for a while on Amherst Island, Ontario.
I move to northern New York as a young man and currently publish weekly newspapers here.
I don't know much about my great grandparents, and would like to hear from anyone who does. I can be reached at: tlfreepress@yahoo.com
Keep up the good work, Dave!
Best Regards,
Dan McClelland.

Hi David
My husband DAVID is part McClelland. His grandfather Richard McClelland, married Isobel or Isabella (Johnson). Both very Irish but Grandmother may have come from a scottish Johnson line. Originally from Belfast, they moved near Woolwich UK in about 1940. They had 3 daughters, - Isobel, Anne and Patricia - and a son Richard who died about 1976. Isobel married DAVID BEAUCHAMP SEYMOUR of BELFAST, and they had DAVID ALBERT RICHARD - my husband - in 1937 and Dorothy who was born in England in 1942 but died at the age of 13 months of diphtheria. Isobel died in 1993 in Lincolnshire followed by David in 1996.
The son Richard had a son Mark, and 2 daughters. We seem to have 'mislaid' the children of Richard, Anne and Patricia.

Hi Dave, I found your site by accident. I typed in: 1953 Michigan marriage “Andrew Emery” and this site came up. I figured it had something to do with Andrew because his wife was a McClellan. Found the entry by James E Pepin <jkpep@together.net>, which is the same line as ours, because all the information he has is consistent with mine with a little extra stuff. I tried to e-mail him, but all e-mails come back undeliverable.
Andrew Emery is my husband’s 2nd great grandfather. Andrew was born May 1, 1831 in Vermont (found on death record from Huron County at the Library of Michigan in Lansing). He married Lucy Ann McClellan on September 11, 1953, (marriage location unknown at this time). I figured Lucy died at childbirth, because she died the same year their baby was born. This is, however, unverified. He remarried a woman named Anna Burns on May 5, 1866 (this location also unknown). Anna was born July 29, 1834. They had a child named Clara born Nov. 29, 1870, Rubicon, Huron County, Michigan. Anna died Dec. 1 1908. Andrew died October 27, 1893 in Huron Co., Port Austin, Michigan, according to the death record. My husband is related through Andrew’s son, Charles Eddy Emery, his great grandfather. Andrew Emery served in the Civil War. I have papers that list him as an enlisted man in the 3rd Michigan Infantry, Company G. It has Pontiac listed as his “home”. It has been tough to find information.
If anyone has anything more than what I have here or what is already listed on this site, I would greatly appreciate any help anyone could give me. I hope the information is helpful to someone else as well. Even if you don’t know anything more at this time, but are familiar with this line, I’d love to hear from you!
Thanks, C. Emery <emerysden@cmsinter.net>

Hello,

My name is Samantha McClelland. My grandfather is 100% Irish, I don't know, however, where he was born. His name is Richard McClelland (middle name unknown) and he married my grandmother, Elizabeth (Betty) Lisi (middle name unknown), Elizabeth is 100% Sicilian Italian. They had 6 children. First was Annete, who married David Waters and had 2 children, Michelle and David (both Michelle and David are unmarried). Second was Darlene, who is still unmarried. Third was Richard (not Richard Jr.), who married Terry (maiden name unknown) and had 3 children (1 of which was stillborn whose name is Britttany), their other 2 children's names are Danielle and Holly. All of their children are unmarried as well. Then there was Michael (my dad) who married Melissa Polinko and had 4 children (1 of which died months after being born), Samantha (me), Alexandra and Jessica. None of us are married. Last of the children of Richard and Elizabeth was Tina, who married Dave Noel and had 3 children, Brandon, Ryan and Lindsay. None of their children are married as well. I hope I can find some of my ancestors!
Thanks and God Bless,
Samantha McClelland

Hi. I just found your website and I think it is GREAT! I am trying to find any information about my Grandfather, George Brinton McClelland, who resided in Upstate New York (Witherbee, NY) with his wife, Elsie Kennedy. They had 4 children, George Jr., Neltson, Marjorie and my mother, Ethel. I am looking for family connections and a possible link to the Civil war general, also a George Brinton McClelland. This had been a rumor but never proven. My Grandfather passed away in the 1960’s. Not much information has ever been passed down. I would love to hear from anybody who has any information about these McClellands in New York. My name is Sharon Gray. Sharon.Gray@erickson.com

Hi Dave I am a fellow McClelland searcher. My Great Grandfather, Thaddeus McClelland was born April 7,1875 near Memphis, Tennessee. He married My Great Grandmother , Emma Jane Rind in Arkansas.
Thad's parents were William S. McClelland born Sept. 10,1849 and Margeret Moore born Dec.18, 1848. She was born in N. Carolina.
Thad's Grandparents were William S. McClelland and Lucinda Davenport, Lucinda was from Mississippi.
We are cousins to the Texas Garners of (Cactus Jack fame) Also they always told a story about Great Grandpa running away at age 15 because he had accidentally shot his brother's eye out with an arrow. He went to Texas, lied about his age and joined the Texas Rangers. We had a cousin, Sarah Francis come to visit once when I was a child and we heard tales of McClelland exploits we had never heard before! I cannot seem to locate anything about Thad's ancestors and would love to fill in some of the blanks. Thank you , Teddy Rose princess@fidalgo.net

My mothers name was Dora Mae Sullivan. She left when I was a baby so I don't know anything about her. From what I remember my father owned a bar called "The little corral"

Hi Dave! How exciting to find this website especially since is has been created by a David McClelland. My father was David Leman McClelland, my brother is David Leman McClelland, Jr., and I'm Diane Pape nee McClelland. It is great to see all the McClellands! Hello Cousins!

I am looking for information on my gg grandfather David McLellan who arrived in Canada from Scotland via Dublin, Ireland. He married a woman by the last name of Wilkinson or Wilconsin before leaving Scotland. They had a son, Andrew, born during the voyage probably around 1845. We think they first settled in Sudbury, Ontario, but son John Edwin was born in Simco, Ontario in 1849, Josiah Alfred b. 1854. Both John & Josiah settled in Michigan. Two other sons Charlie and maybe Robert, I believe were born in Canada but don't know their birthdates. I haven't been able to located Canadian birth records to trace back to David. Anyone have any clue as to my elusive gg grandfather? Thanks so much. My email address is dbpape@yahoo.com

P.S. True to my Scottish ancestry, I piped in a the Birmingham, Michigan Celtic Pipes and Drum band for almost ten years! What fun that was.

Hi Dave,

HI I'M DAVE MCCLELLAND FROM BELFAST NORTHERN IRELAND cherelle.david@ntlworld.com

Hello Dave. Just located your web site and as I am a McClelland, thought I would send you this e mail with some background.
I originally emigrated from Lurgan, Co. Armagh, Nr.Ireland in 1957, and have lived in Western Canada ever since. I am the olderst son of Robert McClelland (Wife Elizabeth nee Allen). My full name is William Allen McClelland (Bill). I have three brothers, Jack, now deceased, who was a goalkeeper for Arsenal F.C. in the early 60's. The other brothers still living in Lurgan, Nr. Ireland are Raymond and Bobby. I really don't have much history of my family tree, except my Dad had two brothers, Jack and William. William died in his early 20's and Jack died in 1970...not really sure of the date. My grandfather William McClelland was in the British Army, Royal Garrison Artillery and was killed at the Battle of the Somme on September 2nd 1916, and is buried at Maricourt, close to Amiens, France. I have two sons David and Kevin, both of whom live in Canada, David in Ottawa, and Kevin here in Calgary, Alberta, where I also live. I am now 69 years old and am retired. Just thought I would send this information to you to add on to "The McClelland Clan"........

Hi Dave
Here is a new addition to your McClelland clan list. My name is Kiernan Allen Yazer McClelland. I'm from Ottawa, Canada. I believe that my grandfather, William Allen McClelland, has sent you history regarding my family's history. Well now, I'm going to tell my part of the family. Like my grandfather has already stated, my branch of the family immigrated from Northern Ireland to Calgary around the 1957. My father, David McClelland married my mother Neda McClelland and they both moved to Ottawa were I was born. My brother, Aydin McClelland was born in Edmonton, Alberta and my family lived happily in Edmonton until we moved to England and lived there for about 2 years. Then we moved back to Ottawa and we have been living there since. That's all I know about my own family. I'll keep you updated. See ya.

Seeking information on a Martin McClellan father listed as John McClelland sometimes, John McClellan, or John McClellon. In Blair Co. PA, USA. Also his mother has been listed as Catharine McClellan(McClellan( on obit. this could be so as there are many McClellan families in the area that are not blood relatives during the era.
Martin worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad and died at age 66. Still working for the Bells Gap roundhouse or in the Juniata Roundhouse as a stationary engineer. I have looked for Martin's birthplace for several years and have always come up empty. Is there another name, first name that would be common for Martin? Has anyone else come across my Martin? In his obit it lists one brother, William of Glasgow, Pa and one sister Alice Hopkins of Altoona, PA. His obit spelled McClellan.

I am looking to find any info on my grandmother ELLEN JANE MCCLELLAND born c 1890 in ?? Ireland maybe near Belfast. All the info I have is from her marriage certificate of 1918,it gives her father as David deceased. She married in Kent England and died 1954 Strood Kent.

Hello,
What can you tell me about the travels of Laura Ingalls Wilder in year 1891 leaving Minnesota to Northern Florida?
It is said that she either took wagon to Westville Florida or Train or she used both means of travel.
What train was running through Minnesota at that time? Was she seen by old timers at that time?

Also Laura came through Westmorland -St Marys-Silver Lake into Kansas along the missouri river 1891 on her journey to north Florida. What can you tell me about this? Was she seen at that time? Did someone snap a photo of her?

Please help with this :ASAP.

Hi Dave,
Since you are involved in so many McClelland interests, you might want to investigate the McClellan DNA Project at http://www.familytreedna.com/public/McClellanProject/ and add it to your listings. This Project is primarily for hobbyists who are using DNA to assist with their genealogy. We have had some success stories along with a few surprises. I am the host and will be happy to answer questions.
Best wishes,

Hello  Dave,
I just noticed your site and thought I would join it.
My great, great grandmother was Anne McClelland  married to Alan Fraser  and living in Queensland Australia.
They had a son, Angus Fraser (died  3/2/1890 ) who married  Alice Jane Hatton on 10/10/1885
Alice came to Australia on board the Ancilla  25th Sept. 1866
Alice Hatton and Angus Fraser had two children,  my grandmother Alice Margaret Fraser born 12/11/1888 and a son, Edward ( or Edwin ) Alan Fraser born 6/2/1887
Edward ( or Edwin ) married Amanda Willis in Queensland  19/8/ 1914

I am still researching my family  but I hope you find the above information interesting and useful.
I want to go back a generation or two and find Anne McClellands parents and then their parents.
Some of these people  must  have travelled to Australia in the very early days.

Regards, Maureen sesame@kooee.com.au

My grandfather, Benjamin McClelland, 1856-1906, county Monaghan,
Ireland, had two older brothers--first names unknown to me--who
emigrated to the US midwest (Iowa?) in the 1870s-1880s while he stayed
in Ireland to look after their mother. He married Margaret Taylor
(1858-1936), with whom he had seven children between 1887 and 1901. His
widow and surviving children (one died as young boy) emigrated to
Toronto in 1913. Robert, the oldest son (1887-1949) lived near Moline,
Illinois from the mid-1920s until his death.
I would be curious to find out if anyone believes they might be
descended from either of my granfather's brothers.

I am looking for any information about Samuel Thomas McClelland born 1861, possibly England (London). He died 1940 in Victoria, Australia. His parents were Samuel Armour McClelland and Annie Tomlin - no details known. Samuel Thomas married Clara Atherley in 1884 in Glasgow and they had nine children. I would like to be able to find a record of his birth and then possibly trace his parents.

Greetings. My 6th great grandfather was John B. McClelland, married to Martha Dale. He was killed on an expedition in 1782 into Ohio from PA. His wife lived on with a son and is buried in SW PA. They had several children, and I descend from their son Samuel Emanuel and wife Ellen/Eleanor Crooks. 7th great grandfather was also John B., and I understand he was born in Ireland although I have no verification of that fact. Anyone with information on this line, I would love to correspond. Please write. Rebecca MeRebecca@aol.com

Hello, my maiden name was Ann Elizabeth McClelland. I was born in 1931. My father's name was William Robert McClelland, Jr. and he had one brother, John (Jack). My grandfather's name was William Robert McClelland and he was married to Elizabeth (Bessie) Redwine from Atlanta, Georgia. My great grandfather was John Forsythe McClelland and he was married to Amanda Reagan.

My Uncle John McClelland had a son in the 1930's. At least I think that was the date. The son was born in Newport News, VA and I have reason to believe he died some years ago.

I have always wanted to know more about John's son. Can anyone out there give me any information about John McClelland's son?

Thank you.

Hi there, I am looking for the McLelland's from Ontario Canada. My father inlaw, Richard Oscar McLelland, Born July 14th 1923, Deceased July 23 2001 had 3 sisters, Mable, Pearl and Ester. He had a brother Sedrick, They have all passed away but we would like to find other family members and find out a little history.Myhusbands Grandparents were Samuel McLelland and Maybe Mary McLelland. We are unsure of his Grandmothers first name.
My father inlaw, Richard Oscar McLelland had 5 children. Richard born February 17th 1956, Ronald around 1952, Randolph August 3rd 1954, Roxanne November 13th 1955, Robert January 29th 1963.My husband is unsure of any cousins etc. If you know these were your relatives, please contact us.

I am also looking for McClellan ancestors.  To date I haven't been very successful!
My paternal grandmother was born MARY MC CLELLAN 13 April 1896 in Milwaukee WI to JOHN MC CLELLAN and KATE/CATHERINE MC GUIGAN.
John was born September 1858 somewhere in Michigan and died 23 March 1917 in Milwaukee WI.  He and Catherine are buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Milwaukee.
John and Catherine were married 6 November 1890 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Marinette WI.  John was a glass cutter in Milwaukee.  They had four children that I know of:  William b. March 1893, Maude b. November 1894, Mary b. April 1896, and Ruby b. 1902.
John was the son of JOHN MC CLELLAN and MARY MC DOODLE, both born in Michigan according to the 1900 census.  I have been unable to find out any more about them.
I am guessing that at some point the McClellans came to America from Ireland, as my g-grandmother, Kate, was born in Ireland.  The McGuigan and McClellan surnames are both found in the Ulster area so I'm guessing (again) that the families may have been acquainted in the "old country".
At any rate, my search has come to a halt and I would appreciate it if anyone could help me out.
Thanks for the great site.  I've enjoyed reading about the many other McClellans, MacLellands, McClellands, etc. etc.

"Harry McClelland, a well-known newspaper man, died at his home, 1358 S. 46th Street [Philadelphia] on Saturday [no specific date is shown], after an illness of several months. He was formerly connected with the Philadelphia Record, but for the last 10 years was identified with the Boston Journal. Hi, I have an update for the message:

From: Amy Seyfried
I have only sketchy information on my McClelland link. Elizabeth "Betsey" McClelland, born ca 1837 (place?), married William Pender. They resided in Dereham Township, County Oxford, Ontario, Canada, by the time of the 1871 census. William and Betsey moved to the state of Washington (Brush Prairie, Clark County) before 1884. Betsey died in 1907. Hoping to find more info - and cousins! I have more info on the Penders, but nothing on McClelland.
              Regards,
              Amy Seyfried, Carmichael, California

From census records Elizabeth McClelland was born in September 1840 in Ireland. Her father was born in Scotland and her mother was born in Ireland. These McClellands would have moved to Canada from Ireland between 1840 and 1862.
William and Elizabeth had 3 children: Benjamin Pender (born 10 Nov 1863), Emma Jean Pender (born 18 Aug 1864) and John J. Pender (born 30 Jul 1866), all in Canada. By 1881 they were living in Adelaide, Ontario. William was a carpenter.

Hi! I am Nancy MacClellan Sears, treasurer of the Clan MacLellan organization which has members all over the U.S. and Canada with a few in England and Scotland. We have a huge database. When a person joins, our genealogy archivist does a search of the database and notifies the new member if there are other members, past or present, who are in the same line of MacLellans (any spelling - and there are several). You may contact me at nancy.sears@louisville.edu if you are interested in receiving an application for membership. The Clan holds annual meetings at various locations throughout the U.S. and Canada. Our archived records are housed at the Odom Genealogical Library in Moultrie, GA.

My original immigrant ancestors are Robert (1716-1789) and Nichola (Gordon) McClellan who came from Kirkcudbright, SCT to NY in September 1774 with their 6 children on board the ship, Golden Rule: William M (b 1755), John (b 1758), Robert (b 1766), Grisey (b 1769), Mary (b 1770), Nancy (b 1771). During my research I have traced descendants of all 6 children. The first 10 years in this country were spent in VT. In 1784 the family moved to Washington County, NY and many descendants are still in that area. Feel free to contact me if you would like to share information on this family.

Visited The McClelland Page while surfing. Thought I should bring some changes in the Clan MacLellan pages to your attention. The Clan website was not being kept upto date by the webmaster so we moved to clanmaclellan.net . The webmaster there will be temporarily taking over the storekeepers job until we find a replacement. See this site for cotton material in the Clan Tartan http://www.thescottishweaver.com/specMaclellanC.html. We have already ordered the minimum initial amount to establish the minimum price which is posted at the site. Due to the hurricanes we have yet to see any of the fabric so I can't tell you how good, or bad, it is.
In a different direction a member in Canada recommended a book "Galloway a Land Apart." Takes the area from the geologists idea of what it looked like after the ice age through the politics of the times up to the present. The politics, religion, and general differences are well covered and the name MacLellan occurs frequently. Not always in a good light, but then neither does anyone else's family name. Galloway a Land Apart by Andrew McCulloch, published by Birlinn Limited of Edinburgh, ISBN 1-84158 027 9. D. Richard Torrance is to bring out a new book on the MacLellans of Galloway. I have heard that this is an update of his two volumes of the same name.  There is a rumor that he will soon have a volume on the MacLellans in Ulster finished. His other books have been published by The Scottish Genealogical Society.

Good health to you

Hi Dave,
As most people have posted here, I too just stumbled upon your great website tonight.  I'm a McClelland (by birth).  Here's my family history as best I know it.

(Me) Lisa Renee McClelland-Stults 1964-        married Jason Stults in 1998
(My Parents) Norman Eugene McClelland 1933-1997 married Diane Rosier in 1963
(My Grandparents) James Edwin McClelland 1908-1982 married Marie Miles 1911-1998
(My Great-Grandparents) Thomas McClelland married Susan Gilkenson

This is all I know and I do wish I knew more.  My Grandparents were born in Marshalltown or Colfax, Iowa.  My Grandfather worked in the coal mines in this area when he was young.  They moved to Rock Island, Illinois at some point which is where I was born.  There they owned a local tavern.

Thanks for the site!

Hello, we are investigating the McKenzie Clelland family,
deriving from Scotland (early 1800s), Carlisle (late 1850s, early
1860s) and London (the later part of the nineteenth and early
part of the twentieth century).
The family seem to have chosen their own surnames and at least
one of them consulted Somerset House on their entitlement to both
names. So we have McClelland, Clelland and McKenzie-Clelland in
various permutations; and often the use of McKenzie as a
forename.
We have traced the family back to Robert and Georgeanna, who
married in Carlisle in 1862. Robert?s father was George Clelland.
Robert and Georgeanna's children were Emily, William, Robert,
Elizabeth, Herbert and Edwin, born between 1863 and 1873.
If this rings a bell with anyone then please do get in touch, it
would be great to hear from you!
Thank you for creating this site. Dave. It's encouraging to see
so much interest in the clan.

and his wife Margaret Geerhart (1801-1864). They evidently moved right
after their marriage. Their children were born in Venango and Butler
counties, Pennsylvania.
First real proof of their existence is an 1823 tax
list in Venango Co. Both are buried in Strattonville, Clarion, PA. I find
a young Alexander McClellan in Centre Co. in the 1820 census with no
children, just a wife in the 1820-1825 bracket.
Will share data I have on their descendants.

Hi Dave, congratulations on your fab site.
My maiden name is  Mabel McClelland.  I've never been able to trace any of my father's family so your site is 'the last chance saloon.'
My father's name was Robert Richard McClelland, he had a brother William  who I think may have settled in Malaysia.   He also had  two sisters Lillian and Mabel.  Lillian was married to a man called Parkes and I believe they had one son, (possibly called Robert).
My grand-father was a sea captain and spent some time in Japan.  My grand-mother's maiden name was Colston  (Rebecca) They lived in Southend-on Sea for some years.  I have some Australian letters which lead me to believe that some of my ancestorsr, perhaps my great, great grand-father spent some time in Sydney, Australia.
I would be thrilled to hear from any McClelland who might have some information, however scanty.

Hi Dave:
Its been a while since I've been able to take my research up again.
I had a website that turned from free to pay, so I had to give it up.
Also, I understand the kid thing. My daughter kept me busy for the
last 4 years.
Here's my search question for those interested.
I have many aunts/uncles/cousins, etc. all residing in the
Westmorland County of PA. My grandmother was Catherine
Moore-McClelland, married to David William McClelland before
divorcing and leaving her with 8 children (my dad the oldest - David,
Tom, Paul, Roy, Kenneth, Luella, Dolores, and Seranna "Bunny").
From that point, I know about the Moores and some about the Pershing
and Riddle side, but that's about all I know is names.
The Moore family had a lot of children (Catherine "Kate", Roy, Glen,
Seranna, and those are the ones I can remember).
Anyone familiar with any of these surnames or the relatives I've
mentioned?
Thanks. Fran Popp fpoppy610@yahoo.com

My name is Keith T. McClelland, DOB: 5/22/44.  My father was George T. McClelland, DOB: 9/10/12.  He was the only child of George H. McClelland, DOB circa 1880 in Ohio.  George Hamilton McClelland was a Presbyterian minister who was a decorated Army Chaplain under "Blackjack" Pershing in the AEF (American Expeditionary Force).  He had a brother, James McClelland, who settled in Detroit, MI.  [I have no children that I know of.]  What, if anything, does the crowd know of these Ohio-born McClellands?  Thank you in advance for your attention to this inquiry. My email: Keith@keithmcclellandlaw.com.

Hi there,
I just found the web site and hope someone out there can help me.
I'm trying to trace my family tree and I need to find several links with my grandfathers mothers parents.
I would be interested if anyone out there has links with any of these names;
Thomas McClelland(McClellan) who lived in Newton Stewart in the early 1900's. Could have married a Jane from either Canada or Ireland. They all lived in
Stanley st, Tranmere on the 1891 cencus.
Thir son ( could have sisters)Alexander McClelland who married Margaret and they lived in Tranmere Birkenhead. They had four children Daisy, May, Jane
E and Alexander McClelland. Alexander Jnr had one son I know of who was called
Donald and fought in WW2. I have lots of old photo of most of these people.
Hope someone out there can help,

Hello all other McClelland seekers,

I am wondering if anybody has any information about a Liverpool based Charles McClelland who was my grandfather. Previously his family were called Blake so we have an Irish/Jewish angle, some of my family moved to Australia and some moved to New York.
If anybody has any info about possible links no matter how tenuous please email me.

Thanks, Jonathan McClelland. shovlins@railplant.fsnet.co.uk

Hey, I was wondering if you could help me locate a McClelland. His name is

Hi,
My name is Erin McClelland. I have been trying to find information on my family history with little luck.  What I have been told is that my family moved to Canada from either Scotland or Ireland (I believe it was most likely Ireland) around the 1830's.  They settled in the Ottawa Valley.  My great-great-grandmother was Annie McClelland (nee Cameron).  My great-grandfather was William Robert McClelland and he was either an only child or the only son (with two sisters).  He married Evelyn Padget (spelling?), had two children and died relatively young.  If anyone has any information please let me know.
Thanks,

Hello again Dave,  Thanks to this site I found a long-lost cousin Carol McClelland Shiels and we’re still looking for our Canadian (and perhaps old country) roots.  Our grandfather, Oscar D. McClelland, was born in Bear River NS in 1879-1880.  His father was Robert M. McClelland and mother was Eleanor Saunders. Our paternal grandmother was Ethel Jane Cooney, born 1878. Her father was William J. of Boston Mass and her mother was another Nova Scotian from Cape Breton named Mary M. Johnson.  I know there are relations in western Canada. I hope they’re reading this.

My son, Dave, sent me a fax today with your information.
I guess I am the only one of our spelling doing anything about
research.
My grandfather was born in Bowmanville in the late 1880's. He was
George Bigham. His son, my father, was George Andrew, born in Comber ON
in 1907. I was born in Toronto in 1933, my daughter in Toronto in 1960,
and my son David in Toronto in 1964. David now has 3 sons, born in 1999,
and twins in 2003.
I would be delighted to share and discuss our relationships. I have
considerable material developed by my parents in the 1960's, with little
confirmation. I have a desire to develop all the little strings I can.

Searching for marriage of Hugh McClelland born Londonderry, Ireland and Elizabeth Williamson.  They married prior to 1826 possibly in Monaghan Co. Ireland.  Their first child Mary was born June 1826.  I don't know where she was born or baptised. The second my ggrandfather David was born June 1828 in Knockbride Parish, and baptised at Corraneary Presbyterian Meetinghouse, Cavan Co. Ireland.
The other children were Sarah, James, Hugh, Robert and Martha all baptised at the same parish.
The family emigrated to Renfrew Co., Ontario Canada in 1842.
Hugh Sr. also had a sister Mary who married James Rowan in Ireland, and emigrated to New Brunswick, Joseph who married 1 Nancy 2 Mary Rock and stayed in Ireland.  Joseph died in Monaghan Co.  There is possibly another sibling Margaret.

Hi, just read over your site of McClelland, I found it to be fun, you see I also am a McClelland by birth right, but I don't know any McClellands except my siblings.  My father's name was Joseph Alan McClelland (born in 1924 0r 25), his mother's name was Bonnie (who later in the 1960s moved to Canada, and was a writer,  and I believe his father's name was Henry McClelland [whom I believe died when son Joe was young).  Joe grew up in Mississippi, raised by a grandmother.  Later was in WW2, then worked construction in Viet Nam.  This is so very little to go on, Joe died in the 1990s.  I've never searched for info.  All though it would be great to know if I have other family out there.  I thought there were only a few McClellands, oh I must have been so wrong.  Whenever I travel I will look in the phone book to see how many McClellands are in there, usually only a few, but  look at us now.

Hi Dave
It's been quite a few years but I stumbled across your page again.  I left a message back in 2000 that my 10 year old daughter, Tiffany, is looking for her dad.  He disappeared when she was only nine-months old.  She's going to be 14 soon and is still wondering who and where her dad is.

My email address has changed since then.  It's now ctpena@msn.com - should anyone have have information on James Russell McClelland (or McLelland or McClellan, etc.) I'd appreciate it.  I have his SSN, but like his name, he often changes it.

Looking for details of ancestors of my grandparents SAMUEL McCLELLAND and MARY ELISABETH McCLELLAND (nee WHINTON, probably in the Carlow area of Ireland) of Castlereagh Road, Belfast. The only dates I have are approximate and refer to my grandmother. Born 1878, died 1962. My grandfather died many years earlier, and I believe was employed in some capacity by Harland and Wolf Shipyard. They had at least 8 children:
Samuel, Martha, May, Mary (aka Minnie), James, Sadie, Gerald (my father - born 1912, died 1991), and Joshua. Any clues anyone?
Many thanks.

Hi David,

Hope some one out there can help.  My Great Grand Mother SARAH MCCLELLAND (June 17, 1873) and her brother EDWARD MCCLELLAND (February 1865) came to America with a step brother Patrick around 1874-1876.  Their parents JAMES MCCLELLAND and MARY BOYLES (BOILS) MCCLELLAND were deceased. I'm not even sure which of the parents died first and which one remarried to Patrick's surviving parent.  I know that Sarah and Edward were raised in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania with their mother's family the Boyles.  Anyone with info!  Greatly Appreciated!

Hi Dave,

Great Site!!  Didn't know there were so many McClellands out there.  I too am a McClelland.  Born 1959, Isle of Wight England.  Emmigrated to South Bend, Indiana in 1962 and then to California in 1963.

My father George Anderson Hugh McClelland born Bushey, 1932 and his cousin John McClelland have documented our genealogy way back to its roots in Scotland.

I have noted that there is one missing link and that is my grandfather's brother Alford McClelland who was supposedly the black sheep of the family and he was banished to the America's in his teen years.   I believe he was born in the 1860's or 1870's.  I had heard that he ended up in Ohio or somewhere in the South and became a sheriff.  I would be very interested in seeing if he has any living relatives as I hardly have any close relatives. (My grandfather Hugh McClelland was the commodore of the British India fleet)

Alford intrigues me!!  I know that he traveled a lot to Burma.  Any information would be very helpful in my search.

Thank you.

My maiden name is McClelland and I didn't see any based in Ky. though
they originally migrated to PA as steelworkers.
My name is Sylvia Louise McClelland 1956 and I have a brother James
David McClelland Jr 1950. My dad was James David McClelland Sr. 1913 and
mom was Leodia LaFern Shelton McClelland 1920. My dad had 3 brothers
Paul Donald, Nelson and Herbert. He also had 3 sisters Fern Duley, Ida
Bell Shelton and Mary Magdeline McClelland (who died of scarlet fever at
2). His dad's name was Karl (spelled with a K). He died as a indirect
result of working at Armco/AK Steel in Ashland, Ky. (on the Ohio, W.Va.
border) back before there were unions and safety regulations. He was
born sometimes in the 1880-1890s. His wife was Mary Agnus Watson. I
think she was born around 1895.
All of this bunch have always lived in Ashland, Ky. as far as I know but
I remember once dad telling me they had first migrated here to PA during
the potato famine. But outside of this he didn't know as he had never
met any of his dad's kin except for his dad's sister Elmira who lived to
be around 100 and died around 1986.
That's about all I know but I'd be intereste in hearing from others who
think we might be kin.

After researching my family for twenty-four years, my friends parents ask in Jan 2003 if I would research their lines. After requesting cemetery and funeral records I found the Pounds line marrying McClelland.
David W. (Winfield) Pounds funeral record in Warren, OH show his parents as Charles Barkley Pounds and Hannah McClelland. David was their only child.
I now have the funeral and cemetery records from Washington, PA for Charles B. (Barkley) Pounds born 11/06/1858 Indiana, PA-12/03/1941 Washington, PA. but it list him as widowed with no mention of Hannah. The cemetery printout of the Pounds family does not have Hannah listed.
This is very limited information but was hoping someone might see a connection. One small lead (not proven just memories from years ago), Hannah seemed to be cousins to Roupe Family.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
My name is Pamela (McClelland) Montgomery. I am trying to trace my roots. My great, great grandfather's name was Jack or possibly John McClelland possibly born around the early 1800's, but not sure where in Ireland. They came to the USA in the early to mid 1800's.
My Grandfather's name was John George McClelland, he was one of 14 children, some where born in the USA but now sure how many, but he was born in the USA on August 31, 1898 died July 12,1989, in the Pittsburgh area of Pennsylvania, USA. He was in the U.S Calvary. I also remember when I was in my very early teens and my grandparents took me to see the McClellan saddles at the National Cemetary in Washington, D.C. and my grandpap smiled and said that he was related to us.
My Father's name is James Joseph McClelland, born Dec. 12, 1922 and is still currently living in the Pittsburgh area of Pennsylvania, USA.
My father doesnt have too much information on the family from my great grandfather and earlier. My Dad regrets not getting this information off my grandparents before they passed away. My husband and I where hoping to fill in the blanks to finish the family tree. Your site got us excited and would like to find the rest of our long lost family to close the Gap. We would like to give this too him as a birthday present by his 85th birthday if not sooner.
Hope to hear from you soon,

Pamela Jean (McClelland) Montgomery

Dear Mr McClelland,

I am interested in the geographical origins of the MacLellans in Scotland and in any dispersals there before the emigrations. There are Protestant MacLellans/McClellands (however one spells the name) for example whose locations in Gaelic Scotland I do not know. Neither do I have yet a general picture of where they came to rest in the new world (inc. Aust and NZ). I am working on a text of an academic nature and enjoy spreading the credit, if not money.
